great place, great suntan

Sail Date: January 2010
Destination: Western Caribbean
Embarkation: Miami

We were on the valor Jan 31st to Feb 7th. We have been on 19 cruises so know what to expect. The valor met our expectations in most areas. Embarkation and debarkation went very smoothly. Rooms were exceptionally clean. Food selections were better than normal with dishes I have not seen on cruise menus before. Production shows were great. The second one featured music from the 80s. I have wondered for years if lines would finally move out of the 50s/60s music to reflect a younger demographic. There were 3 comedians with each having a family show and a late night adult rated show. We have never seen 3 comedians in one week.

Big Tex the cruise director was great. He was informative and factual. Not over the top hokey and full of dumb jokes like many cruise directors.

Our only slight detraction about the trip was that our dinner waiter was disorganized and we often got our dinner served while others were already eating dessert, Less

Cabin review: Carnival Valor Balcony Upper 6228

Cabin was fine. Three closets! Not much drawer space. Comfy large bed and pillows

Port and Shore Excursions

We booked a private excursion to Bannister isle. It started with a power boat ride to a snorkeling area. The snorkeling was just so so. Waves were very rough and probably should have just skipped this part. Bannister isle was wonderful and I could have spent days just there. Beautiful white sand beach! Very few people so able to enjoy all the amenities. Clean bathrooms. We then traveled to the mangrove area to search for manatees but had no luck.

The dock area is full of bars and stores. Silly statues to take your pic with. Lots of free samples of drinks. Looked liked everyone had a great time partying!

We went with the ship's excursion Twister to Passion Island. We are in our 50s and chubby but had no problem with the boats 360 spins. My husband who doesn't like amusement park rides that spin loved it! Passion island was very nice. Just 4 stores with the normal souvenirs. Lunch and drinks were included in the price. The drinks were pretty week so get the beer! Food was good with chicken, rice, salad, fruit, bread, dip and salsa. Rum cake for dessert which I went back for thirds. Paddle boats and windsurfers were free. Large trampoline! Clean bathrooms. On the way back, those that chose could stay back on the island while more spins were done on the boat. Then the fun ride back to the dock. We were given free margaritas at the 3 amigos bar as part of the package.

Mahogany bay was closed due to strong currents. At least that was what we were told at about 11 am. We were then docked downtown. There were no waves there so don't know if we were told the truth about Mahogany bay or not. With the late notice we had to scramble for an idea to how to spend our day. We had planned just on spending the day at the beach at Mahogany. We quickly booked the ship's excursion to Tabayana beach. So our beach day went from free to $ 90. The beach there was very nice and enjoyed the beauty and the water. Snjoreling was great there.
