4-day NCL Sky to Bahamas...not bad!

Sail Date: January 2010
Destination: Bahamas
Embarkation: Miami

This was our first big-boat cruise. We are a retired couple who travel frequently by air and car, and thought taking a short cruise would give us an idea of whether we'd like to try cruising as an alternate way to vacation.

The Norwegian Sky is a beautiful ship, although you can tell it's an "older" model. We found the ship to be very clean. There are plenty of busy spots on the boat for activities and people-watching, also plenty of places to "get away from it all" where you could sit -- inside or out -- and relax or just chill out. Besides our balcony, our favorite hang-out became the Outrigger Lounge because it was usually quiet & uncrowded -- at least the times we were there. We liked the not-too-big size of this ship. We also liked the Hawaiian decor, maybe because we've traveled several times to those islands! We had a little trouble finding our way to some of the smaller aft restaurants, but found the maps helpful, as well as any staff we asked for directions. More Quality of food I would rate "good" to "excellent" depending on where we ate. Favorite was Le Bistro -- excellent food and superb service. Terrific variety of restaurants: from super-casual to elegant. We were always seated quickly, tho' we tend to eat on the early side. (We did not use room service.)

Our balcony stateroom was on deck 10, forward, starboard side. It was quiet because it was directly under the spa! We liked the quick access to forward upper decks and the fitness room. Decor was fine; bed was pretty firm (not to my liking, but ok), plenty of pillows; plenty of storage space for the tight quarters. Enjoyed the balcony!! Had two nice chairs & a small table -- sat out every evening listening to the ocean and watching the stars. Also a nice spot to watch the sun rise. Service was outstanding! Our room steward very responsive; all dining personnel outstanding. One of our party has a food allergy, and was accommodated politely and professionally. Had problem with the toilet one morning -- notified housekeeping & it was fixed before lunch; the next day we rec'd a complimentary bottle of wine AND chocolate-covered strawberries! We didn't take advantage of much late-night entertainment. Saw the Broadway show, which was "ok." On-deck live bands/singers were great! Piped-in music to the buffet area was too loud, especially in the early mornings. I want to add that getting onto the ship was pretty quick. We boarded about noontime. We checked our carry-on bags curbside before we got on and later wished we'd kept them with us as we didn't get the second bag until almost 6pm. However, I can see where it would be a nuisance to lug your bags around until the staterooms are ready (about 2pm), especially if it's your first time on the ship and you want to explore, as we did. Getting OFF the ship was really quick! We lined up early as we had a 10:30am flight out of Miami. We got off at 7:15, breezed thru customs, got a taxi and were at the airport before 8am!! Less

Cabin review: Norwegian Sky Balcony Stateroom Viking Deck 0205

Balcony cabin, forward, starboard side, deck 10. Quiet because it was directly under the spa and not too near an elevator. Boat movement/rocking not an issue for us. Closet & drawers were ample for a 4-day trip (stuck our suitcases under the bed). Could not open closet and bathroom doors at the same time! Bed was way too hard; could use extra padding; nice to have extra pillows. Comfortable chairs on deck -- I believe we had the newer (mesh) ones. Safe was adequate size, but would not fit a laptop, fyi. Decent supplies in bathroom: shampoo, conditioner, lotion, body wash. Hair dryer in desk drawer, tho' of poor quality. Liked that we had robes in the closet; sad we couldn't take them home :-)

Port and Shore Excursions

I would give Freeport/Lucaya itself a "3," but I would give our excursion a "5-plus." We took the guided Kayak trip to Lucaya National Park. It was fabulous!! We had an excellent/knowledgeable nature guide... This was a 6-hour excursion that lasted 8 wonderful hours! (We DID get back to the ship in time!) The excursion included kayaking thru a mangrove swamp, a stop at a very pretty beach, a short nature walk, and a visit to some caves. The lunch provided at the beach was pretty bad, I have to admit: sliced bread, low-quality cold cuts, PB&J, cookies and lemonade. I avoided the lemonade (tho' I would have loved some!) because the bees were ALL over the lemonade jug, plus they were crawling all over any cups that had even a hint of lemonade in them. We met some really nice fellow cruisers on our excursion, and it was pleasant to see them again on the ship from time to time.

We only spent a couple of hours in Nassau. We did not choose to do an excursion; we had planned to sign up for one of the snorkle trips, but the air temperature was only in the upper 60's and the water was barely 70 degrees (F) -- too cold to get into the water. Getting off the ship you're funnelled thru a small, congested market with lots of touristy stuff. We walked downtown, and were delighted to stumble upon a ceremony near the Government House. There was a brass band, soldiers, and a parade of wigged & robed jurists. We were told it was the "first day of the law year." We also visited Christ Church, a beautiful cathedral in town with lots of history on its walls. All along the sidewalks you're constantly asked if you want a taxi, a tour, etc. But we politely declined and were left alone. We mistakenly took a wrong turn in town and ended up in a very sparsely-populated area where there were quite a few men sitting or walking around drinking from bottles (booze?) in paper bags. No one approached us, but we thought it prudent to go back the way we came...there have been reports of tourists being mugged in Nassau.
