Cool Cruise

Sail Date: January 2010
Destination: Western Caribbean
Embarkation: New Orleans

We flew into New Orleans Sunday. We took a taxi and boarded the ship at 2:45 pm. The set rate for the taxi is $33 for two from the airport to downtown where the pier is. There were no lines for embarkation and all went well. The weather on this cruise was excellent. Be advised to bring a jacket and sweater on January Caribbean cruises and maybe an umbrella too.

This is not a new ship. A lot of the windows in the area of the buffet are double pane that have lost the seal between the panes allowing moisture to cloud them. We chose not to eat in the specialty restaurants. The food and service in the main restaurants was very good but not exceptional. The entertainment in the showroom was pretty typical cruise fare. We liked the acrobat and his partner. They are part of a grand finale show with magic the last cruise night that should not be missed. We entertained ourselves in the casino and I saw one lady get a $20,000 payout with a royal flush!!

Disembarkation was very More easy. Those of us carrying all our own luggage got to get off the ship first. No tags, no hassle, a quick $33 taxi ride and we were at our gate at the airport by 8:30 am. In the end, the super weather made this a superior cruise. Less

Quiet location. Excellent room

Port and Shore Excursions

In Belize City we had to ride a tender boat from the ship to the pier for this port. Just did a little shopping and returned to the ship.

Costa Maya is definitely 3rd world and if there is a nice part of town we missed it. Took the $2 per person taxi to town and ended up getting a nice massage by locals on the beach for $20. There were many people desperately trying to sell you their stuff as you walked by.

For Cozumel, we booked a tour on the ship to the Mayan Ruins at Tulum. This tour took up all our time in port. It started with a ferry ride to Playa del Carmen, followed with a bus ride to Tulum. This is a culturally based tour with a chance to swim in the ocean.

Really didn't make the effort to see Bourbon Street again.

Santo Tomas, Guatemala has a building at the pier with cheap internet and souvenirs. We booked a great river tour at this building for $45 per person with operator Mar & Sol. Our guide Jessica was outstanding. At one point in the tour Mayan children in their child size canoes came to meet our boat with colorful parrots and other stuff. Only port WITHOUT a Diamonds International right at pier (nice change).
