We have done 13 cruises on sevral different lines. We select a cruise based on itinereary, date, and cost. This was our 4th Princess cruise and 3rd consecutive year on CB, but all with different itineraries. We felt this was the best Caribbean itinerary we have experienced. We are in our early 60's and retired. PRE-CRUISE: We flew to San Juan a day early and stayed at Holiday Inn Express, which is filled with cruisers evry weekend. It is convenient to the airport, ships, and old town. we always fly in one day early, as we don't want to miss the cruise due to weather problems, and we also feel that the port of departure is a PORT and we want to experience it. Saturday night we ate near the hotel. Sunday morning they have a complimentary breakfast. We ate, checked out, had them hold our luggage, and took the bus ($.50 each-COINS ONLY) to Old San Juan. We strolled around, looked in some shops, stopped for lunch, rode the free trolley for a while, and then took the bus back to the hotel. We got our luggage and took a taxi to the ship. (Taxis-airport to hotel $17; hotel to ship $17). EMBARKATION: We arrived about 4:00 and were on and in our cabin by 4:30. We sat by the MUTS pool and watched NFL play-off games. Our luggage was in our cabin by about 6:00. CABIN: We previously have had balconies, but this time took and inside on Baja deck. Less costly and we are only there to sleep and change clothes. Plenty of storage space. Cabin attendant di a great job. DINING: We used to eat in the dining rooms, but now find the buffet more relaxing. It also offers most of the same choices at dinner as the main dining room. It seemed that there wer a lot of people eating there in the evening. we also did breakfast there and lunches were ashore except for the sea day. Food was very good. ACTIVITIES: We like to be on the water and relax. Other than watching MUTS football, we spent most of our time at the "quiet" adult pools at the back of the ship. Never had problems finding lounge chairs. ENTERTAINMENT: 3 consecutive years of the same production shows. Went to one of them just to see if it had changed. It had not. Saw the hypnotist and found it boring. 2 comedians; 1 was okay BUT Rolling Jay Moore had the whole audience laughing for 45 minutes. We felt, overall, the entertainment on this cruise was the weakest we have seen on Princess. PORTS: St. Thomas-went to Emerald Beach Resort. (Taxi was $4 pp each way; 5 minute ride) Paid $20 for 2 chairs and an umbrella. Beach bar-beers were $5. Tortola-went to Brewer's Bay (Taxi was $7 pp each way) Paid $10 for 2 chairs. Lots of shade trees. This was our favorite beach. Probably like it was 20 years ago on the other islands before all of the development. Beach bar beers were $3. Fish sandwich and fries was $9 Antigua-took taxi ($8 pp each way) to Darkwood Beach. Very nice sand and water. Paid $13 for 2 chairs and umbrella. Beers were $5 each. St Lucia-took a private tour with Serenity Tours. No complaints BUT it is an island tour which is mostly driving on twisting mountainous roads. The lunch was nice and view from restaurant was beautiful island. Barbados-we always do 1 sailing day and here we went on CALABAZA, The best sailing day we have ever done. FIRST CLASS ALL THE WAY. Food and drink all day. Stops to swim and snorkel with giant turtles. We will definitely go with them if we return to Barbados. DISEMBARKATION: We had a late flight so we asked to depart in latest possible group. We were scheduled for 10 but due to customs problems on the pier, we were not called until 11:15. Off ship, got luggage, through customs, shared a taxi to airport ($22 per couple). AIRPORT WAS A MESS. If you fly out of San Juan, you must first take your luggage through a agriculture machine, then to the check-in, then go through security. All lines were EXTREMELY long. SUMMARY: This cruise was exactly what we expected it to be. Good service and food, average entertainment, and great weather and ports. Our best Caribbean itinerary, yet. (No towel animals, but I have seen them before). Take care.
