Holiday aboard Eurodam 12/2009

Sail Date: December 2009
Destination: Eastern Caribbean
Embarkation: Fort Lauderdale (Port Everglades)

Holland America continues to provide the friendliest crew who attempt to please you in every way. Beautiful holiday decorations everywhere. Food is excellent in all areas. Everyone smiles and is gracious. Cabins are very comfortable with outstanding beds and linens. Flowers everywhere. Too many bars for us. Daily activity program is so-so and layout of schedule could be improved. Seems many fewer activities than on previous cruise.

Things we didn't like--Lido pool area for families is too crowded with deck chairs nearly on top of each other. Holland has added another feature to squeeze more money from its passengers by adding private cabanas along one side of Lido pool area which can be rented daily. These take away a large area from this public space. Also another entire deck 10 section has become a private area called The Retreat and is available to only those who rent cabanas on this outside deck. Internet access is slow and costly. Flexible choice dining still requires More reservations if you wish a certain time. It works fine for just 2 or 4 people, but we had a group of 8 and it was not the smoothest process.

Overall is was a good value for money spent. Less

Cabin review: Eurodam Large Oceanview Stateroom Main

We had a mid ship main deck cabin designed for 4 and there were just 2 of us. Extra space was nice. Closets are not deep, but adequate. Room safe works great. Like sheer curtains separate from room darkening ones. Miss having the privacy curtain that you could pull to close off bed from hallway. Bathroom is nice with tub/shower and shelf below sink for storage. Nice reading lights that doubles as a night light if you wish. Beds are super comfortable.

Port and Shore Excursions

It is a cruise ship port which shops that we built by cruise line and therefore no real local feel and all money funnels back to cruise line. Beautiful beach close to pier with lots of deck chairs at no cost and shade is available. A gorgeous, gigantic pool area next to Margarita-ville bar that is free to all cruisers. Some snorkeling in the roped off swimming area. No peddlers to both you. Island is still underdeveloped compared to many other Caribbean islands.

Friendly shopkeepers. Easy access from cruise ship pier to downtown. Everything appears relatively safe in the daytime.

Crown Bay docking area is about 2 miles from downtown shopping area. You can walk it and sidewalks most of the way. There are some shops close to pier that have been put up by cruise line. Not as nice as Havensight shopping area near other cruise ship dock. St. Thomas still provides the best shopping in Caribbean and it's super crowded if more than 2 ships are in port. Lots of things to choose from to do that appeal to most everyone.
