Shore Excursions Galore

Sail Date: December 2009
Destination: Southern Caribbean
Embarkation: San Juan

We sailed out of San Jaun on the Serenade of the Seas. It was a wonderful cruise. We have cruised 7+ times usually in early December (love the holiday decorations, great deals and smaller crowds.) We had an aft balcony. Very nice room with larger balcony. We had 2 lounger chairs and 2 reg. chairs. Balcony was wonderful. My time dining worked out great for us, the loyalty ambassador made our reservations and remembered our name and cabin number each time we saw her, Ms. Yao was wonderful.

We went on several shore excursions including: Segway tour in Barbados (what a wonderful unexpected experience! Really recommend it. The only bad thing was the long ride to the site (45 minutes!). Had a great time on the Shadowfax Champagne and Lobster cruise in Grenada (word of warning the Rum punches pack quiet a punch-got a bit tipsier than I had planned! embarrassing!) Miss the St. Maarten beach break just ok. Not really into full frontal nudity. To each his own but was a bit More disconcerting. Antigua sightseeing tour just ok shouldn't stayed with planned Creole Cruises, oh well tried to save money. Snorkel trip the the Bath in Virgin Gorda was the highlight of the cruise, fun walking through boulders, fantastic snorkeling--we even saw sting ray's.

Night before cruise we stayed at the Intercontinental, very nice beach had dinner at the beach side casual restaurant, very nice. Publix shopping center near by (you can see it from the upper hotel floors but you have to walk all the way around past chili's)

Serenade is a very nice ship, quieter than the other ships, not much night life but with an island every day your too tired to stay up late (or at least we were). Portofino's was wonderful Eden is a great server, Chop's completely missed the mark. Loved the Sea View cafe-you order sandwiches (no surcharge) never crowded and had great Reuben's. Food in windjamer fine, really enjoyed the made to order omelets. Breakfast in the room just okay but nice as a wake up call. Crew very friendly, Canadian Captain and Cruise Director

Noticed some cost cutting but in the economy who isn't, nothing really affected us, got a great deal so we were happy. All in all fabulous experience for a great price. Christmas decorations we a bit lame. But overall a beautiful ship. Less

Cabin review: Serenade of the Seas Superior Oceanview Stateroom Deck 9 9685

Our cabin was in the back of the ship next to the Royal Family Suite. We had plenty of room, loved the large balcony. Tiny shower and bathroom had a faint unpleasant odor. The balcony is the draw here 2 large loungers and 2 reg. chairs. Long walk to elevator but this helped us work off our food. Would choose this cabin again.

Port and Shore Excursions

Beautiful scenery, we were tired by this island so I just opted for a bus tour while hubby slept in. Was interesting, like the tour of Nelson's Dockyard and the scenery from look outs but wouldn't do again.

We booked the Segway adventure through the ship, it was my husbands pick and I wasn't excited about it but it turned out to be a great time. We felt weird wearing pants (required) but it was thrilling. The drive to the site was long (45min.) but we were rewarded with beautiful seascapes and cows staring at us. It sounds strange but it added up to a unique exciting adventure.

Grenada is gorgeous, the harbor is charming. We booked the Shadowfax Champagne and Lobster Cruise through RCCL, in a word, Wonderful. We sailed on the catamaran to Hog Island where we had lunch (that wasn't very good Lobster overcooked). Watch out for the rum punches they are very strong. It was a wonderful day, very pricey but worth it.

They are dredging the harbor so skip beach in town. We went on a RCCL shore excursion Beach Break on Orient Bay, just ok. Beach was beautiful but when we got to our chairs they were sold to other tourists so we had to sit in the back row. According to the tour guide this never happens but it happened to us and nothing was done about it. Be prepared to see full frontal male nudity - not a prude but was a bit jarring. Skip the shore excursion and rent a car.

We booked shore excursion through RCCL on-line, glad we did it filled up. We went snorkeling in the Baths on Virgin Gorda. It was the highlight of our trip! Beautiful scenery (pictures don't do it justice) wonderful reef life adventurous walk.
