We sailed on the Gem in October. The ship was almost exactly like the Pride of American we took last year with the freestyle dining. I will cover the dining first. To give some background, my husband and I (40's) traveled with our in-laws (60's)and no children. We took the trip to get my father in law to take my mother in law to Europe and see as much as we could in a short time since he doesn't like to travel and probably would never go again! We all love to dine out and have high expectations of our food and service.

We ate in most of the restaurants starting with the main dining room on sail away night. The food was pretty good. Service was OK. The biggest issue we had on several nights with service was getting our drink order taken and our drinks to the table before the food order is taken. Since the bar costs money the orders are taken by a different waiter. We don't like to be rushed and if someone is serving us dinner in a Tuxedo, they should know how fine dining should work. On the second night we ate in the French Restaurant and the food and service was very good. We ordered one dish, the Lobster, that was the additional up-charge on the up-charge and wouldn't do that again. Try the fondue for dessert. Don't order the salmon as it is the same in any of the restaurants. Nothing special. My steak was very good. This was our favorite on the Pride of America as well and generally we never would choose a french restaurant to go to.

We ate in the Magenta one night and sent 2 of our dishes back. Had the same problem getting drinks. Once we complained management was all over us the rest of the night.

Cabin Review

Mid-Ship Balcony

Cabin BA

We had a cabin mid ship. It was very quiet. We had adjoining rooms with my in-laws and we opened the balcony door so we could all sit out side and have a drink together. It is supposed to be closed when moving, but we opened it when we wanted and shut it when we left the balcony.
