First of all, there is a very important disclaimer: If you don't have kids this is not the cruise for you. As expected, this cruise of totally designed with families (and more specifically with pre-teen kids) in mind. It is very hard for an adult to extricate him/herself of the Disney environment and treat this as "just another cruise" (more on this topic later on). Pre-cruise: I booked the cruise almost one year in advance through a specialty cruise agent. The price was great. I took a "Land and Sea" Package that included 4 days in the parks and the 4 night cruise. It was really great have everything set up for me (Hotels in the Disney Area, Transportation to and from the Pier, Transportation from the Airport to the resort, etc.). Once in Orlando, I was able to check in for the cruise in a desk at the hotel. I had competed my documentation on-line, so I had all forms and requirements completed before I arrived in Orlando. However, be aware of one small detail: If you are not a US Citizen you will have to go through a line and present your paperwork (or at least confirm it) before entering the cruise. This process defeats the whole purpose of the online check in, hotel desk registration, etc. If it is a government requirement due to security, fine. But the Cruise line should let the non US Citizens passenger know that in advance, in order to avoid misunderstandings. Another small issue came out when I received my cruise confirmation. I had requested first seating for dinner and I was assigned second seating. I called Disney Cruises (as did my agent) and I was informed my request was "on waiting list". I was never informed why I was seated in the second shift having made my request with the reservation. The only option I was given was to inquire as soon as I were on board the ship. Thankfully, as I arrived to my cabin, I found the tickets with the first seating assigned. The Cabin; First big and positive surprise. Being a "budget" cruise traveler, I typically book inside cabins. I was given an upgrade to a "Oceanview" cabin for a very small fee. I was surprised when I found out I actually got a small balcony. I was expecting just the typical small round window. The cabin is very big. It has two separate areas: one of them has the main bed and the other has the TV, Desk and Sofa bed. My daughter enjoyed having "her own room." The bathroom is divided in two: you can have one person taking a bath while another is either using the service or using the sink and mirror. Big advantage when you have more than two in a stateroom. The negative note is the closet space. Thinking about the typical family, it is not enough to have just one close with one storage space. We had to medium size suitcases and could not fit them in there. We had to put one of the floor, taking some circulation space. The Ship; In general, the ship looks in great shape. All the public and circulation areas are spotless. The only minus, and I don't know if it was a coincidence, but during my trip several public area restrooms broke down. The pool area (heavily used, I should say) was not properly kept by the service personnel. There was almost always water in the floor (dangerous) and the tables had used food plates. Now the most touchy subject for my family: I have never taken this particular itinerary, but during the first and last night, the ship rocked so much that both my daughter and my wife were seasick. The sea did not seem particularly rough (1.5 to 2 m waves according to the bridge report), so I can't really understand why this was happening. Having been in cruises in other areas of the world where seas are supposed to be more difficult to handle (The Pacific, for example), I can't think of anything else to blame but the ship itself. I know that other lines (Royal Caribbean and Carnival, for example) have added artefacts in their latest ships to reduce the movement... Has Disney done something like that? The Entertainment; Well... It is Disney... What would you expect? The shows are probably the best I have seen in any cruise. Great productions, quality and talent. One strange thing is that there was one night with no show. Instead, they presented a newly-released 3D Movie. It was a nice touch but in general, I would have expected one show every night. Other activities like parties (including two themed, Halloween and Pirate) were great for all ages. There are also plenty of opportunities to enjoy with the family, like game shows, trivia games, karaoke, dance lessons, etc. Most of them were Disney themed. No surprise there. There is a movie theatre with almost non-stop presentations of the most current Disney and Disney Partners movies. Excellent choices. Children Activities (Clubs); This was, unfortunately, the lowest point of the cruise. My daughter, a 7 year old, veteran of 4 cruises, has always made use of the children clubs and activities. She has fond memories and, of course, high expectations about the Disney experience. Just enough to say, the first day when we picked her up, she looked at us and said : "I was bored". I can relate to the situation on this particular cruise: While the typical ship in a typical itinerary has to deal with a few kids, this ship has to deal with literally, hundreds of them. It is highly impersonal and activities are many and sparse. What bothered my daughter the most was that she could not find the same people of group of children attending the same activities during the cruise. On a more personal note, we found the people in charge of the kids very serious and down to business. No smiles, no hellos, no goodbyes. Check in, move in, check out, move out. They were more concerned about counting heads than engaging with the kids. Having said that there were two or three activities my daughter enjoyed very much, especially the "Friendship Rocks" closing presentation. All the kids presented a small show in the main theatre. Great experience. Food/Restaurants: I like the idea of having the formal dinner in different, themed restaurants. It gave a very interesting variety to the experience. The food was great and I enjoyed the selections every night. Service was fast and accurate. Special requests were taken and delivered. The buffet is a little bit crowded and the way the food lines are set up make it easy to get the food but not come back for more (what would be of a buffet without seconds, right?). The fast food eateries are very good. You always find hot pizza, hamburgers, tacos, etc. I used them two or three times and I never had to wait more than a few seconds to get my food. I found particularly good (idea for other cruise lines to follow) the fact that soft drinks are included. You can walk in to a dispenser and take a cold coke or Fruit Punch without being hit with a huge tab at the end of the cruise... Wines, cocktails and beers are pretty affordable. Itinerary/Ports of Call/ Shore Excursions: For me, it was more about the cruise than the itinerary itself. I had never been in the Bahamas. The cruise stopped in Nassau. This is mostly a shopping port. The shore excursions were a little bit over-priced for my taste. We decided to take the Atlantis Beach Day. Atlantis is a huge, massive, deluxe resort. We were upgraded to the interior lagoon because the normal beach was closed that day due to high winds. We had access to everything the resort guests had access. It was a good experience overall. The visit to the aquarium was the highlight of the day. Transportation to and from the resort was fast and on time. The second stop is Disney's Castaway Cay. You can just decide to get down the ship and enjoy the beach ($0) or take any of the suggested activities. We decided to snorkel. The snorkel area is very well guarded, making it a very safe experience for the whole family. However, the equipment we rented was less than acceptable. One life-jacked had an air escape, one of my fins was broken and my wife's snorkel gear did not fit properly. All in all we spend close to an hour between renting, returning and testing. At the end we were happy, but we also wondered if it was worth it... We also made use of some of the free family games and activities and my daughter had a nice experience with the club activities while we enjoyed a cocktail in the beach. Lunch was BBQ style. Excellent. Other miscellaneous items: At the beginning of this review, I talked about the experience to people without kids in this cruise. Although there are several areas of the ship that are "Adults only" and there are several adults only activities, it is practically impossible to avoid being with or around kids. The cruise features most of the things you are supposed to find in a cruise (Bingo, Art Auctions, Shopping presentations, pricey photographs of everything and anything you do). If you are a fan of any of those, you will not miss anything aboard the Disney Wonder. Disembarkation; Best in the industry! No queues, no 2 hour waits with your bags and screaming kids in a hot and crowded lounge. You are given the chance to take breakfast in your assigned table with your dinning room team starting at 6:30 am or the buffet. After that, you are welcome to leave the ship at your discretion. When we arrived to the baggage area (at 8:15 am), the bags were there. 2 min walk to customs and then 2 min walk to the transportation hub. Overall, this cruise was a good experience and It was well worth the money we paid for it.
