Great Experience on the Splendor

Sail Date: September 2009
Destination: Mexican Riviera
Embarkation: Los Angeles

Great experience on the Splendor!

We flew into LAX the morning of the cruise and took a taxi to Long Beach. We stopped at the store to pick up some wine and beer and put that into our suit cases. I know, I know - we are not supposed to bring beer on but I assure you my bar tab was ample as what the rest of the group.

Embarkation - it was a breeze. We got to the cruise terminal around 1pm and were on the ship and in our room within 45 minutes of getting out of the taxi.

Decor - yes, it is pink - really pink - but the decor grows on your after a few days and/or a few drinks.

Room - we had a balcony cabin and it was tastefully done. It was your typical cruise line cabin but was nice. We were on the Lido deck.

The first 2 days we spent a lot of time on the Serenity Deck. Great spa music playing while we laid in the son and read and had drinks. This area is kid free and very relaxing. We spent most of our time on the Serenity Deck if we More were getting sunning.

The Spa is very nice - probably the nicest that I have seen on a ship. The work out area is very nice and had adequate free weights, cardio equipment, and machines. We did not get any services from the spa but everyone who did said they really enjoyed it.f

Casino - excellent! The dealers were great and we played blackjack every night we were there. We never had to wait to get onto a table. They had plenty of dealers and plenty of tables. They had regular BJ, fun 21, and face up blackjack as well. Tons of slot machines, 3 card poker, craps, and pretty much anything else you wanted to play.

PV - nice port. We took a taxi to the shopping and walked around for a bit. It was hot and humid. We really did not plan anything in PV and wished we had. It was too hot to be walking around so we got lunch and drinks and headed back to the ship early.

Mazatlan - we went to Aroma Spa and had massages - A MUST DO while in port. We got 2 hour massages for about $28 per person. Anna, Knute, and the rest of the staff were amazing. The services were amazing. The place itself is not a 5 star resort by any means but it is not a dump either. The tables, sheets, towels, etc were all clean and nice. We had cervezas while we all got our volcanic foot treatments that lasted an hour and cost $10. I highly recommend this place and they went above and beyond for the 4 of us. We then walked over into the market - stayed there for about 5 minutes and took a taxi back to the ship.

Cabo - went to the Pueblo Bonito Blanco resort and laid out on the beach under their cabanas and drank cervezas for about 5 hours and had lunch....total bill for the 4 of us was about $50 total. I don't know if we are allowed to use the resort but we had been there before and just got out of the taxi, walked through the front doors and out to the pool and the beach. Great place right on the ocean and the shopping comes to you. Vendors come by to get you to by their stuff. They did not bother you so it was fine laying under the cabana as they did not bother you.

Dining - did the late dining and had a server by the named of Lego and Iwayan. Both from Indonesia and were both great. I would give the food an 8 out of 10. Ask for the servers suggestions as they were always on the money. The chocolate molten melting cake is a must. I had it every night and it was great.

Things to bring - your PATIENCE. Yes, the boat has 3200 people on it plus 1200 crew but it really never seemed crowded. However, patience is a must as people are on vacation and in their own world and drinking and just do their own thing. Just know going in that you will need patience but other than that everything was good.

The shows/entertainment was actually really good. Probably the best of any cruise ship I have been on. Keep in mind that this is not Vegas quality entertainment but it really was good. The piano bar was a blast and the disco was great the one night we went dancing.

Overall, I would say we had a great experience on the ship with little or no complains. Honestly, if you can't have fun on a cruise - you should probably just stay home :) There is something for everyone on a cruise and you can do as much or as little as you want. I will cruise on the Splendor again in the near future. Less

Port and Shore Excursions

OK - Mazatlan is not the prettiest or nicest of cities. It is very industrial. We ended up booking massages at Aroma Spa and it was truly amazing. We got 2 hour deep tissue massages and a 1 hour volcanic foot massage (think it would be like a pedicure) and the massage was $27.50 and the foot treatment was $10.00. Yes, we got 3 hours of treatment for $37.50 each. We tipped the therapists generously because the treatments were great. We set them up prior to sailing. Just know walking in that this is not a 5 star resort by any stretch of the imagination but it was suitable for our massages. For the price, you can't beat it. You check in at one place and then you go across the street to another place for your massages. The rooms are air conditioned and the therapists are great.
