As stated in other posts, an Alaskan cruise can never be bad. The scenery and adventures in port will always make up for anything lacking on board. I cruised Norwegian Jewel in November '08 on a 5 day Western Caribbean itinerary and LOVED it. So with my cruises being less than a year apart, it is difficult not to make comparisons in terms of on-board experience. This review will concentrate on my impressions of Star Princess. I will work on a separate posting(s) relating to the ports of call.

Embarkation: Was actually well managed and efficient at Pier 91 in Seattle. I think some of the earlier posts reflected a new operation. They seemed to have worked out the kinks.

Cabin: Once onboard we were able to proceed to our staterooms immediately. Our mini-suite, D207 was very nice. Ample storage for 3 large gay men, 2 of whom over pack. Bathroom was small but nicely appointed. There were 3 of us in the cabin and we never felt crowded. Beds were a little saggy, egg crates helped. I am surprised that the mattresses were not changed out at dry-dock. Norwegian Jewel has Star Princess beat hands down on bed comfort. 2 televisions in the stateroom really seems like a waste as it's really difficult for the third person to watch something different as the sounds clash. Plenty of clean towels and linens were always fresh. We were provided lotions and soaps in individual bottles; however I have to say I prefer Norwegians in-shower dispensers. Having the balcony jut-out as if cantilevered from the ship did not bother me on a cold-weather cruise, was actually nice to be able to have a more sweeping view. However, in the Caribbean where I may be sans-clothes, I would not choose this cabin.

Cabin Review

Cabin AD

Great balcony, but no privacy! Very far forward so can be quite a walk to and from certain things on a ship this big.
