Fabulous Crusing with Noordam

Sail Date: August 2009
Destination: Europe - Eastern Mediterranean
Embarkation: Rome (Civitavecchia)

Whilst we have cruised with other lines before, this was our first Holland America cruise as well as our first cruise on the Mediterranean/Aegean. I must say that the main difference that we found was that the Holland America line seems to have a real 'family' feel to it. By that I don't mean families travelling on the ship (although there were many!), but more like you were treated as part of one big family. They also recognise past passengers with pins and medals depending on the number of sea days you have had with them.

From the moment we registered everything was so well organised. We were upgraded from a Superior Suite to a Deluxe Suite which provided us with a fabulous cabin as well as a number of privileges on board.

We had a deluxe balcony suite which was simply fabulous. Extremely spacious with a huge balcony as well as a full size bathroom with double vanity and a separate bath tub with spa jets and a shower outlet as well as a shower cubicle. More The added bonus of a powder/dressing room was also great. Location was quiet - our cabin was located mid-ship. And the bed was heavenly!

The cruise itself was simply fantastic - this is undoubtedly due to the great staff on board who were only too happy to assist you with anything you wanted or needed. They were warm and friendly and very courteous. An added nice touch was that whenever you returned to the ship from an outing - there they were with cold towels and drinks - such a welcome sight particularly travelling around Europe in summer.

We certainly enjoyed our 10 days on the ship and would not hesitate to travel with Holland America again and have no hesitation in recommending them to anyone wanting a great cruise. Our cruise had a mix of ages from toddlers to seniors and people of varying nationalities - which was great. Less

Port and Shore Excursions

The Acropolis and the Parthenon are simply spectacular. We caught a cab from the dock to the Acropolis - this cost us around 12Euro. We did our own tour, buying our entry tickets etc ourselves - this was very easy to do and also gave us more time to visit the site. The entry ticket also gives you access to a number of other ancient sites which is very handy. We caught a taxi back where we had some issues with the cab driver as he didn't turn on his meter - lucky we had just started our journey and when he wanted to charge us 25Euro each which he dropped down to 12Euro each, we asked him to set us down. We managed to get an honest taxi driver who took us to the port - costing us only around 7Euro! Make sure when you travel in Athens that the taxi drivers put on their meters!!!

Quaint and picturesque with lots of little alleyways and shops. We walked from the port to the town area and it was very easy to get around. People were very helpful.

A wonderful fairy tale like place! We did our own tour of the wall and the City taking advice from the Trip Advisor website and found it quite easy and simple to do.

We visited the ancient city of Olympia whilst we were docked at Katakolon. As it was quite a way out, we did an organised tour with the cruise ship which was very interesting and informative. Unfortunately organised tours don't leave you a lot of time to explore by yourself - but at least you get some good information from experienced guides. It was fantastic to actually stand on the original Olympic track and view the stadium etc and see where the flame is lit in our current era.

Another pretty port! As it is quite a distance away, we took a ship tour to Ephesus which is a fabulous ancient city - and a must if you have time when you dock at Kusadasi. The bazaar is quite interesting and the shop keepers are quite lively. You need to bargain - and be sure of what you are buying.

Picture Postcard Perfect! A truly pretty place. We caught the cable car from the dock area to the top of Fira where it was relatively easy to explore by yourself. From Fira we caught a local bus for 1.40Euro each, each way to Oai - again very easy to do. Oai is a must if you go to Santorini - it is so pretty. There are also local tour operators much cheaper than tours organised by the ship.
