We had always thought that a cruise to Alaska would be a nice vacation. But it wasn't at the top of our vacation list. When John Heald scheduled a bloggers cruise for Alaska, that made the difference and we booked. Generally Alaska is an expensive cruise as we needed to fly to Seattle, excursions are expensive, and the charge for balcony cabins is high. We kept costs down by booking an inside cabin with floor to ceiling glass doors that open. It's called a 4K cabin. It's positioned behind the lifeboats and if you book far enough ahead you can get one positioned between lifeboats as we did. We were in 4123 and instead of a life boat we had metal bars in front of our view. We were able to see the view, the weather and feel the temp before heading out. For Alaska this was perfect. If it was the Caribbean, we would have spent extra for a balcony.

We arrived in Seatle the day before our cruise and had booked with speedi shuttle to go to our hotel. This was our first error. Speedi shuttle is not speedi. We waited 30 minutes for the shuttle to arrive, then 15 minutes for other people to join us, then 45 minutes for drop offs. Wasted 1 1/2 of vacation time to save $10 off a taxi fare.

In Seattle, we stayed at the Moore hotel, very old building, but clean and quiet. Not to mention across from Pike Market and half the price of nearby hotels. However they do not serve their wonderful waffles until 8 in the morning. So we had a fabulous breakfast at Three Girls, across from Pikes Market. In the market I bought a gorgeous bouquet of flowers to take onboard for our cabin, only to have them confiscated at check in.

Cabin 4K

Good cabin between the lifeboats. Doors open. Thermostat doesn't work. One outlet above the bathroom sink, and one outlet at the desk. Our steward brought us an extension cord to use.

Port Reviews

Victoria

We only had an evening here. Shouldn't have bothered to get off the ship. A shuttle to town was $11 pp rt. However most everything except the bars were closed.

Ketchikan

Just walked around and finally found the city bus to take us to Totem Bight. We enjoyed the totem poles. Went to the museum which was a waste, should have chosen the heritage center. We visited creek street which was interesting, but $10 pp to go in Dolly's house was a rip off.

Seattle

Visited Chihuly glass, and Skycity for dinner on the day of arrival. and Pikes Market in the morning before departure. Loved it all! Don't buy flowers, they're forbidden to take onboard.
