The Uniworld cruise in the lagoon of Venice turned upside down any preconceptions we had of the region. The number of islands, the extent of the waterway and it's environment was a revelation. The cruise itinerary was excellent allowing us time to visit the historical sites around the Grand Canal (including some out of hours special tours) and to explore several of the islands and wetland areas that provide much of the history, culture, food and colour of Venice.

The River Countess proved an excellent " home away from Home" with comfortable cabins, an excellent dining room, bar and lounge. Meals were excellent and there was a good choice of wines with each meal. The staff ensured all passengers needs were met and we had a Tour Manager well versed in the history and contemporary features of the region. As we have found with Uniworld cruises of the past they ensured that our local guides were well informed. Some of our on shore visits started reasonably early in the morning and occasionally out of hours when all other tourists had had left for the day. This was a bonus because even though our visit was out of peak season the crowds at the key sites were large. A visit to Venice is highly recommended and the best way surely is to stay on board a comfortable river cruiser.
