First, let me just say I enjoyed the cruise. But, there were so many things wrong with the cruise that what should have been a great experience was reduced to a standard good experience.
Restaurants:
We acquired symptoms of strep throat after eating at the Tropicana Room. Nevertheless, we enjoyed our dining experiences at the other restaurants. Unfortunately, the symptoms would flare up again with each visit to the Tropicana Room; and, as the cruise continued, the germs spread throughout all of the restaurants. For instance - we would witness the staff collecting dirty dishes then, immediately, serve fresh food without first washing their hands. By the end of the cruise - the health issues compelled us to eat only fried foods and drink boiled water (coffee) to ensure our food was adequately free from germs.
Our balcony stateroom was quite normal, except for the fact that it was poorly cared for by the attendant.
The cabin attendant was slow. He was always showing up at inconvenient times. Changing our plans to accommodate his arrival was a daily occurrence. Very few days went by when he did not properly stock something, whether it was - a bath mat, tissue, room service order forms, towels, etc. Our ice cube tray was stocked with dirty glasses (so much so that we finally kept a stock of plastic glasses that we would get from the Cruise Critic meeting room.
The first week of the 16-day cruise retained the foul odors of the previous guests. The floor was never vacuumed.
Usually, a full-size mattress pad is placed over the beds when they are put together. But, we had to contend with a crack between the two twin beds. And, the small mattress pads were not zipped to the mattress; so, we had to feel steel zippers through the sheets because the small pads were not centered and kept slipping off to the side.
The port was too far from the main tourist areas, but the transit system was good and the people very friendly and helpful. We had a very pleasant visit.
The ship was too large to maneuver into port during rough seas, so we were forced to skip this port.
We had a great experience in Rotterdam. The ship was close to many of the tourist sites, and the shuttle bus moved us around very efficiently.
As we arrived at the Port of Miami, bellman working for the Port of Miami met our bus. We were made to feel as if we had to pay an additional gratuity. Then, when we refused because all gratuities were pre-paid, our luggage was set off to the side. We quickly grabbed our luggage and carried it inside. Inside we were told to give the luggage to the bellmen outside. We explained what happened and insisted that NCL staff handle to luggage.
