The fjords of Norway, the history of the Vikings at sea, the historic ports and the history of the Hurtigruten, dating back to 1893 as a daily connection for folks - all these drew my interest. But it was the opportunity to join with friends for an all-girls adventure with longtime friends that launched my first voyage.
The ship, the Richard With, named for the founder of the historic line, was just the right size. My cabin was remarkably roomy and comfortable, on one of the top decks. I loved the warm bathroom floor, and the large window on the starboard side as we headed north. However, I soon learned that the port side has plenty of chances for views of the mountains and fjords, too, which is a feature of weaving in and out of the coastal islands.
Dining aboard The Richard With was filled with local favorites and fresh foods from the ports we visited. I recommend the wine package as it was well paired to the food offerings.
A large window, with room darkening shades, made this cabin very liveable. Heading into the Midnight Sun made having this cabin a place I could enjoy the view, the various nighttime port calls, at any hour. The warmed bathroom floor was a nice touch and the shower had excellent water pressure. I understand all water on board is potable. Cleanliness and service was never in question, always quietly accomplished even though I kept some erratic hours. Absolutely a great choice of cabin.
