Sail Date: May 2017

This was how it was presented to us and to some 2750 others: the only chance this year of a short trip on the Celebrity Eclipse, sailing from Southampton to Le Havre. And Back. To see what the line was like and what the ship was like.

Embarkation was chaotic. Hundreds of passengers, most trundling their luggage, slowly creeping their way round and up and down the lines to the check- in desks. Where the mandatory health check forms had to be completed and signed , and the credit card and the dollar/sterling exchange rate system explained. The worst procedure in fifteen such in the last two years. By far.

On board, the cabins were not ready, so we were directed to the self service food area which was overflowing, with people flooding onto the stern deck. We found two chairs in the intermittent rain. Akin to a motorway service station at peak period. Not much luxury so far.

Port Reviews

Le Havre

The trouble with Le Havre is that if you are not interested in its remarkable but brutal architecture, and if you cannot find your way to its lovely Japanese garden - or even if you do, you find it closed - there is really not a lot to do here, unless you shop. You can walk to the centre - the way is well marked from the cruise terminal - but it is quite a distance with not a great deal of interest along the way. Some remnants of the old port. And you may have to negotiate the traffic coming to or leaving the Brittany Ferries terminal. But handy if you would like to visit Paris.
