The cruise centre is beautiful and seems to have been fully repaired from last year’s Hurricane Ike; the rest of the island is in rough shape.  We walked through the cruise port, down the beach to the left when you’re coming from the ship.  We intended to go to Governor’s beach but it was under repair and blocked off so we rented beach chairs and umbrellas from Oasis Divers and snorkeled under the peer.  The water drops off very quickly here but the snorkeling was okay, we saw a lot of species of fish.  We found some great shopping here in Grand Turk and chose this spot to pick up souvenirs for our family and friends.  We went back on board for food here since we couldn’t find anything authentic and didn’t want to spend a fortune at Margaritaville.   This is a nice beach and I am hopeful that when we return the island will have made a better recovery beyond the Carnival Cruise Center border

St. Thomas – St. John  I had expected this to be the best day of the cruise however it was somewhat disappointing.  The people in St. Thomas are pushy (not Jamaica pushy but irritating just the same) we had decided to go to St. John’s Trunk Bay and had read a review with details about how to get there using public transportation.  We followed the directions to the letter but were unable to get a “bus” to take us to the ferry so we paid some local guy $5 each (for 4 of us) to take us there and then paid $5 each for the ferry there.  We checked the returning ferry times on the September 2009 ferry schedule and then on the wall of the terminal and then again when we arrived in St. John, we took a cab ($6 each) to St. John’s trunk bay, the beach was nice, lots of shade and options for renting equipment, buying snacks, drinks, restrooms etc. the snorkeling was okay but not as good as Cozumel or Roatan.  We stayed until 1:45 and then headed back to port to catch the 2:15 ferry to Charlotte Amelie, when we arrived we learned from a rude, disinterested ferry port employee that there was no 2:15 port today, when I protested, showing the sign on the wall in front of her and the ferry guide she told me it was not her problem and walked away – the entire time she did not get off the cell phone she was chatting on or stop smoking her cigarette.  We had to wait until the 3:45 ferry to Red Hook then catch a cab ($10 per person with 8 of us crammed in a van) back to Charlotte Amelie which left us no time for shopping and a lot of lost time at the ferry dock in St. John.  It was irritating to say the least.  I was happy to get back on the ship and next time I think I will book an excursion if I am ever back on this island again.

Other dining options include a great sandwich deli on the lido level, a burrito bar, Mongolian grill (always really busy), Emile's, the Grande Buffet, the Pizzeria and the Jardin Cafe (you pay a minimal charge for exceptional desserts here; you must try the $2 Fat Chocolate Cake just once!I learned once on board that the Liberty has limited availability for Your Time Dining in the Golden Olympian dining room where guests can choose when they would like to dine and with whom, anytime from 5:45 to 9:30.
