Traveled with children

This was our first Disney cruise. We had great weather. We did the 3 night as a test. If we liked it, then we could book something longer for next year. We registered for the kids club before embarking which was fine and easy. The kids thought the name announcing was cool. We went to deck 3 (Tritons)for lunch which had so so food. The kids went swimming right after, which got very crowded. Bring your suits as carry on. That was the only time they went. Our room was ready around 2 but luggage didn't arrive until about 5. We were getting nervous because we had Palo reservations at 6 and we knew we had some ironing to do. They have laundry and irons on 3 levels. We had an outstanding concierge suite on level 8,with an outstanding concierge. Our suite was at the back of the ship and man did we feel the boat a' rockin that first night. The bathrooms doors were sliding open and shutting all night. We had to drop the kids off at the kids club so my wife and I could eat at the adult only Palo. After reading the bad reviews about the dinning room food, we felt dining at Palo was a must and it was. We felt guilty leaving the kids because we aren't these parents who dump their kids so we can go drinking or do our own thing. We were shocked at the amount of crying kids in the 5-7 year old Oceaneer club. It was like first day of pre-school.I hope they weren't left there until the midnight closing. I felt sorry for the counselors, who were fantastic. No crying kids in the 10-12 years Oceaneer lab. My 7 year old didn't want to leave her club, but my 11 year old was bored at hers. I was a little surprised by the class and almost gang type attitude of some of the young teenagers running around the ship. Adult supervision was nowhere to be found. Maybe the ship wasn't selling out and discounted fares were made available to Florida/Bahama residents. Palo was great. I was dressed in a jacket and tie, which was the stated dress code. We were stunned to see dressed up women and their men underdressed in Hawiian shirts and shorts. Come on guys,I know you're on vacation, but women like to dress up and it's O.K. to look nice at something other than a wedding or funeral. Excellent food at Palo. The best pizza, beef, seafood. The chocolate soufle, however, was just O.K. Don't know what the big deal was. Our waiter Michele was from Itay and you could see the real passion he had for the food he was serving. Not like our dinning room waiters whom, when you could understand them, eminated this false "I care about you" attitude, because I want a good gratuity later. I wish there was a way to dine at Palo more than once during the cruise. Our night at Palo we noticed many of the ships crew dining there in their dress whites. What does that tell you? The couple next to us made a comment that the "help" shouldn't be taking up valuable dining spots at Palo. Can't fault them for going where the good food was. The dinning room food was terrible. If the other cruise lines we've been on, can serve great food, why can't disney? My wife graded it a step above theme park food. Except for the kids chicken strips, adults couldn't get a chicken breast. It always came on a bone. We ordered the grilled chicken assuming it would be a chicken breast, nothing in the description stated otherwise, but it came attached to the rib cage, what I would call a raosted chicken. The beef was the worst of it. It was inetible. Worse than Australian beef. I tried the steak sandwich from room service and it was just a nasty piece of grizzle. The first day I had a tasty chicken caesar wrap at Goofy's Gally, but everytime I tried to get back there it was closed. The food at castaway cay was tasteless, even the fruit! and I don't know how that's possible. Hamburgers, hotdogs, ribs, fishy fish and chicken on a bone of course. No fries for the kids. And they kept trying to get you to eat this banana bread at every meal. The mousekeeping service for our room excellent. The service at dinner was overkill at times. Our server saw my 11 year old was slow to eat her chicken strips,so he cut them into small pieces and started feeding her. She was motified! I tried to take a picture to use as blackmail when she's a teenager, but my wife said no and than politely told our server she can feed herself. I love how if you want to make a substituion on an order, the server will" check with the chef" to see if it can be done and of course it gets done and now your server is just the greatest and he deserves an extra gratuity. I'm sure people fall for this all the time. It was very difficult to understand the staff at times so one would just smile and nod your head. Toy Story was visually interesting but we never laughed, not once. There were no funny scenes. If this is going to Broadway they better put some comedy in it as they did in the movie. Nassau was crowded and scary at times. We took a cab over to Paradise Island (Atlantis) and our driver took some ghetto back roads to avoid traffic. We had people coming up to our window begging for money. Try to stay on the main drag. Atlantis was huge and crowded. We had 3 ships in port with 5 ships scheduled for the next day. The waterpark lines were so long and you had to fight for tubes at the lazy river, but it was the best lazy river ever. The tube slide through the fish tank wasn't anything. Food was extremely overpriced. If it wasn't for Atlantis,I believe the Bahamas would be another Jamaica. WE live at the Jersey Shore, so Castaway cay is not that thrilling for us as it would be to someone from Iowa, but it was nice. Snorkling was good, not Discovery Cove, but alright. We watched pirate night from a distance and saw the 3 minute fireworks display from our veranda. Somehow we always get suckered into bingo. No complaints with some of the other activities.

It's well documented how Disney has cut back services at their theme parks and it's quite obvious Disney has cut back on quality on their ships as well. If we had truly enoyed our trip we were prepared to book a week long cruise for next year. Booking on board gets you a discount of 10-20% with shipboard credits of up to $600. There are many cruisers who believe Disney can do no wrong, but I think we'll wait for the new ships. Maybe things will improve by then.
