We have done several Princess cruises as well as a couple of Oceania but this was our first on Royal Caribbean. Oceania is our favourite but I won't compare it to RCI as it is a cut above although slightly more expensive (not much when you factor in the inclusions that are extra on some other lines. I thought RCI and Princess were similar but we definitely prefer Princess, Similar to another review here we found there were several things probably designed to cut costs, as well as a lot of upselling. For example, in the specialty dining rooms there were additional costs for certain menu items, even though a fee has already been paid. Also: I have never encountered a hotel or cruise where basic amenities were not provided. 3 days into the cruise I learned that I could indeed get shampoo but I had to ask for it. That seems really chintzy to me! One thing we liked: no corkage fee for wine in the dining room. Unfortunately you can only bring on 2 bottles of wine per cabin, so this bonus didn't go very far! The dining system was very confusing and unsatisfactory. We are used to "anytime dining" where we can just show up at the dining room and be seated fairly quickly at a shared table, which we prefer. On this cruise, the "My Time Dining" seemed to work differently -- we had to make a reservation in advance and even then it involved waiting for a table when you arrived at the arranged time. Even more irritating, although we requested sharing we twice ended up sitting alone, 2 people at a table for 6. One would think with a pre-arranged reservation they could see who else had requested sharing, and arrange the table and time accordingly. Quality of food in the Windjammer buffet was not bad, although I would classify some items (fried chicken and fish) as mediocre. Likewise for dining room food - all of it was decent but nothing I would get excited about. Staff were friendly but sea days activities were lacking. Entertainment was generally good, especially the special performers who were not part of the crew. I recognize this is an older ship and perhaps some of the things I am complaining about would not happen on newer, larger ships....but unless there is a particular itinerary or excellent price, I don't think we would chose RCI again.

Cabin Review

Large Ocean View Stateroom

Cabin was fine - comfortable bed and a small sofa. Good service from the room attendant.
