Sail Date: Apr 2017

We are big fans of the Royal Caribbean and Celebrity format, but last year we sailed on the Emerald Princess because the price was reasonable and we hadn't done the itinerary before. We rather enjoyed the Emerald, particularly the happy hours, so when we found out the Majestic was being launched in April, we loved the idea of sailing on the 5 day maiden voyage.

Our cruise travel agent packaged a couple of days in Rome before sailing so we explored Rome first. We were picked up promptly by our taxi driver on Tuesday morning, and it took 90 minutes to get from the centre of Rome to the port. Embarkation went smoothly, and we were in the Marketplace buffet for noon.

First impression: the Majestic is not as "boutique-y" as the Britannia, nor as "glitzy" as some of the RCI ships. I think they've got the balance just right. it is destined for the Chinese market, and every sign you see is in English first, translated into Chinese. On this sailing, there were over 900 guests from the UK, apx 400 from the US, apx 400 from China, and apx 300 from Italy, or so the cruise director, Dan, said.

Cabin Review

Cabin Can't remember

We were on deck 9, in a balcony cabin. The cabin itself was fine - we were the first guests to stay in it - but from day 1 we noticed a problem with the air con unit on the ceiling. Quite simply, it blew out cold air from the moment we stepped into the room until the moment we left the ship. As we sailed in April, the weather was temperamental and the chilly air was noticeable, particularly at night. We reported it twice to Guest Services, and 3 times to Rodgi our steward. Unfortunately nobody was able to fix it so my husband tucked a towel over it to stop the cold air from blowing.

Port Reviews

Rome (Civitavecchia)

We embarked at Civitavecchia, this wasn't a port visit as such. However, we have been into Civitavecchia before and it's very nice. Small, clean, plenty of internet cafes.

Kotor

Kotor is a village set in the mountains. We took a hop on hop off bus around the village. Not much to see, although it included a visit to the Roman Mosaic centre. After spending a couple of days in Rome before the holiday, and seeing all those magnificent ancient statues, buildings, etc, I'm afraid the mosaics didn't really excite me.

Corfu

Didn't enjoy Corfu. We haven't been before, but have visited several other Greek islands and this fares badly against them. Santorini and Mykonos, definitely have ticks against them. Corfu, Kos, Crete, and Rhodes have all seen better days. It's a shame, because I think they've probably enjoyed some good times, but the obvious lack of investment shows. Half finished paths, exposed pipework, shabby buildings, run down cafes, shops full of tat. If I was looking for a holiday that wasn't a cruise, Corfu would not be one of my chosen destinations.
