We had done a Viking River Cruise, so we were familiar with Viking. We really liked the itinerary (Shetland Islands, Faroe Islands, Iceland, Greenland, Newfoundland) and the Viking Star had gotten rave reviews (well deserved as it turned out).
There is an inherent gamble in sailing the North Atlantic late in the season, but we had mostly fine weather. The two exceptions were near the Faroe Islands where very rough seas prevented the ship from mooring, and at the L'ans Aux Meadows site in Newfoundland where waves eventually became too high for tender operations. There was some disappointment among passengers, but most understood that the captain made the right call for our safety.
All cruise lines pamper their passengers, but Viking excels in doing that with efficiency, superb quality, and with a dignity that is commendable given that so many passengers want the same thing (food, shore excursions, etc.) at exactly the same time.
The cabin was spacious and had a nice balcony. The bathroom was clean and efficient. The were some issues with the television which was supposed to relay the intercom announcements but did not, so we had to open our door to hear the announcements from the hall speaker. Our attendants were personable and efficient, and were happy to chat with us when time permitted.
