The Hurtigruten Astronomy Voyage was the perfect way to see the northern lights! Our astronomer (Ian Ridpath) and Norwegian Historian (Einar Sen-Jacobson) provided organized and informative lectures, guided our night-sky sightseeing, answered questions, and were always available. We thoroughly enjoyed that the Hurtigruten ships are working vessels and intentionally chose that line so we could experiences the beauty of Norway. The Hurtigruten vessels are equipped with special nite lites on the aft deck to reduce light pollution and maximize viewing the the aurorae are out.

Minimalist packing is key; plan on layers of clothing. Do pack a swimsuit for the jacuzzi and enjoy the lovely sauna. The nite sky is the entertainment so bring some camera gear. Daytime diversions: bring your favorite card games and books, stroll around the promenade deck, walk on shore if docked, sit in the observation lounges and take in the incredible Norway scenery.

We flew into Bergen 2 days prior to our cruise embarkation to enjoy the city and recover from jet lag. We loved our stay at the Clarion Hotel Havnekontoret - helpful staff, great chefs who prepared wonderful breakfast, dinner, and WAFFLES from 4-6 PM. Enjoy Bergen's museums, cafes and take the Fløibanen, a funicular railway up Mount Floyen to walk around the Troll Playground and enjoy a snack.
