Sail Date: Mar 2017

We have sailed on Viking River Cruises and were so impressed with the service, the size of the rooms, meals, the included excursions we thought it would be the same for the ocean. While the food was first rate, did have a few minor issues with meal service which we pointed out at the end of our cruise. Overall the included excursions and for the most part the executions of getting to them was great. We did have 2 days in a row where we were unable to dock at our destination (due to high winds). Toulon for us was a bust- since we did not dock in Toulon the included excursion was not great as we did not see the city at all. We also did not dock in Monaco and as we were also 2 hours late even before getting to tender we were also unable to see Monte Carlo. However the excursion we had purchased for that day was great and we saw a lot of the countryside. Some of the excursions we purchased that I would highly recommend were the Flamenco Dance and Tapas Dinner in Barcelona, the Perfumes of Grasse and the Tuscany Wine & Merenda Tasting (where I actually made focaccia in the vineyard in a 240 year old wood burning oven!)

The size of the stateroom is great as is the bathroom. All rooms have a view as there are no interior cabins. Our cabin steward was first rate & always quick to fill requests. The entertainment on board was wonderful and varied. While we did not have time to visit the spa it looked to be top notch and very service oriented. We also did not use the fitness room but it looked to be well set up. Unless you just want to have a glass of wine or beer with your lunch or dinner I would suggest the beverage package if you like a cocktail or want to explore the wine list further. We also took advantage of the offer of going in early and spending 2 days in Madrid where we really enjoyed the city and the food (and also had an included tour) and stayed at a great hotel. This was only the second cruising for this ship as it is brand new so a few kinks I am sure they will work out. So I would wholeheartedly recommend this cruise. But take time to do your research so you know what you do what to see.

As we had been in Rome before we did the day on our own so we could revisit some favorite places. In Madrid, Barcelona & Rome if you have not been I would suggest doing the Hop On Hop Off buses so you get to see a lot more of the city than in a tour and you can get off and explore. Also be sure to fill out all your paperwork online ahead of time to make your embarkation go very quickly. Most of our local tour guides were top notch and really knowledgeable. Also suggest getting your euros before you leave as exchange rate at the airport is not good and while they cannot do an exchange on the ship they can make change if you need for tipping.

Cabin Review

Cabin deluxe veranda

The cabin was great. King bed-very comfortable, beautiful veranda with table and chairs. Bathroom has a nice size shower and large vanity and deep sink. There were shelves and 2 drawers which was great. 2 comfortable easy chairs, table and desk and chair. Blanket and binoculars were included. We did have a mini bar with soft drinks included. Ours was ideally located near the elevators and stairs so always close to the action if needed.

Port Reviews

Barcelona

We had booked an afternoon tour of the Gaudi but it was cancelled due to the Gaudi needing to be closed. The city tour took us around and we saw quite a bit though.

Florence (Livorno)

This was great- we had time to walk around and explore the tower (and climb it if you wanted!) the basilica and the cathedral.

Toulon

As we were unable to dock in Toulon due to high winds we docked in another city and were bused 1 1/2 hours in the rain to see a fort that was closed that day so we could not even see it and then back on the bus and back to ship. We did not even get to city the city although our guide said look right quickly and there it is as we drove by! I would venture to say this was our only really unpleasant experience the whole cruise.
