Sail Date: Dec 2016

We had such a wonderful time on the Viking River cruise we took in October, 2015 that we decided to take the New Year's in the Mediterranean on the Viking Sea. We had a wonderful day in Barcelona and left for France that night. One hour into the cruise the ship tripped a transformer - the Captain determined they did not have the parts on board the ship so he turned the ship around the next morning, returned to Barcelona and cancelled the cruise. I believe they lost the power to the port side propulsion system which meant we only had one engine. Viking refunded 100% of the cruise to every passeger, gave everyone 50% off their next cruise and gave you the option of either staying on the ship in Barcelona for the duration of the trip or they would assist you in getting flights home. We elected to stay and could not have been happier.

Viking arranged tours every day - both in the city and outside. They had shuttle service into Barcelona from 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. if you wanted to go in on your own. They went out of their way to turn a very unfortunate situation into a positive one.

The ship is absolutely beautiful - both the staterooms and the common areas (very open and bright). The food in every restaurant was excellent. We ate at Manfreddi's several times and loved it. The food in the World Cafe for breakfast and lunch (we did not have dinner there) was always inventive, fresh, beautifully presented and you had plenty of choices. We had the Silver Spirits package and the wines that we tasted on the cruise were excellent although you do get wine and beer with lunch and dinner.

Cabin Review

Cabin Deluxe Veranda

The room was beautiful. Plenty of storage under the bed for your luggage. Large closet with robes, slippers and a wonderful umbrella in case it rained. The bathroom was fabulous - plenty of storage space and heated floors. There is a refrigerator in the desk which help plenty of beverages that were restocked every day and your carafe of water was always refreshed during the day.
