We chose this cruise as it departed from Melbourne and was sailing to the South Pacific. We were very disappointed with the ship as we had read previous reviews which gave it good feedback. We felt that the ship was old and tired and urgently in need of an upgrade and revamp. Also there was a constant awful sewerage smell near the Vista Lounge at the rear of deck 7. We also felt that the layout of the ship was awkward and does not flow well. Seating in the International Cafe is hugely insufficient and it was always hard to find a seat to enjoy a light lunch or coffee at any time of the day. The food in the IC was excellent though! The piano bar also has insufficient seating and was crowded each night. Seats around the outdoor swimming pools was hard to find. Food in the dining room was really disappointing and cost cuts are now becoming very obvious. We went to the Crown Grill and Sabatinis which were both excellent and well worth the small cover charge. The Horizon Court buffet also has a weird layout and the food was okay but not as good as on previous cruises we have done on both the Sun and Dawn Princess. So many elderly passengers which I don't have a problem with but the ship was crowded with walking frames and mobility scooters (and slow moving queues). The ports were terrific and we didn't require any ship organised shore tours. Both embarkation and disembarkation were smooth and efficient and of course the staff were all amazing. Skywalkers Nightclub was also amazing and we enjoyed the Elite/Platinum cocktail hour most days. Happy hour in the Wheelhouse Bar was also great but could be quite dangerous!! In my opinion, Golden Princess is not on par with the older and smaller Sun and Dawn Princesses.

Cabin Review

Balcony

Cabin B4

We were excited to book an aft and thought it would have been terrific however we were very disappointed as the cabin was tiny and very dated. The bathroom was also even smaller than we have experienced on our many previous Princess cruises. We had an extended balcony however it was always wet from the ocean spray and received very little sun. The beds were the hard and uncomfortable but our wonderful cabin steward Denis did his best and provided us with foam underlays which made no improvement. The carpet was worn and dirty and the doona covers were stained. It was awful. The safe did not work and the toilet blocked on several occasions.

Port Reviews

Noumea

A terrible port, I dont know why the majority of cruise ships still call there other than to refuel I suspect.

Mare

The most beautiful beach and well worth the $15 bus fare to get there (through Princess), always my favourite port!

Mystery Island

Also a beautiful tropical paradise. Prices getting more expensive as more and more cruise ships call in.

Port Vila

Also a favourite and the locals are friendly and welcoming. The best duty free shopping (alcohol) in the Sth Pacific!

Champagne Bay (Vanuatu)

How many favourites can I have? Champagne Bay is absolutely beautiful and the water warm and clear!

Luganville

Not such a good port but we hired a local taxi and he took us to the Blue Hole and then onto a beachside resort. We had a lovely day despite being stung by a swarm of hornets.

Melbourne

We embarked in Melbourne and are very happy with the ease of accessing public transport from Southern Cross Railway Station and then a tram which takes us directly to the pier. Station Pier does not have the best facilities for cruise ships and any improvement will make a considerable difference to the visitors experience.
