We wanted to see Mexico and thought that a cruise going to Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta, Cabo San Lucas, and Manzanillo would be a great start. We got back from our 10-Day cruise on the Grand Princess to Mexico this morning. The time off the ship was mostly fabulous, but it was only a total of about 26 hours in Mexico. We were able to find great independent tour guides for about 1/4 to a 1/3 of the price of what Princess Cruises offered.

The time on the ship was good at times, but we would have preferred to be home most of the time. About 90% of the passengers were at least 20 to 25 years older than me, and all the shows were 40s & 50s based. Our stateroom service person was great, and overall the service was on the good side. Even though room service got our order wrong, a few times they didn't return with our drinks, and a couple of the staff lied to avoid helping.

The buffet style dinners had a good item or two at times, but the quality was often below Hometown Buffets'. The dinners in the restaurant were good, but you couldn't find the promoted "included" drinks at most places on the ship and the majority of their fruit was either not sweet or brown inside. Three pieces of furniture in our stateroom fell apart, and there were buckets throughout the ship catching water...and it wasn't raining. At one point the ship began making all these noises and we were sure it was breaking down in the ocean. For about 3k, Never again not-so-Grand Princess

Port Reviews

Puerto Vallarta

We walked out into the town.

Manzanillo

We ate at a local place and took a taxi cab to the iguana farm, and he dropped us off about 8 blocks in front of the port for shopping.

Cabo San Lucas

We walked around Cabo. The area around the ship is enclosed, it took us about 2 hours to figure out how to get out into the city. Everything was super expensive in Cabo, some things were more expensive than the states. The food was good, but very Californian. Shopping was also expensive. One merchant told us that if we were Mexican Citizens we would be charged double what they paid, otherwise it would be triple. I don't mind spending money, but I don't like wasting it. So I probably won't return to Cabo.

Mazatlan

There were vans that charged $25 per person for a 3 hour tour in the city. Got to see so many sites, even the condominium that El Chapo was arrested at. The Driver took us to the best and biggest lobster that we ever had, for about $20 a plate. We also had fresh coconuts from the nearby coconut farms. They were incredibly sweet.

Mazatlan

Took us all over the city and on cliffs and roads, explaining the landmarks, current economy, and legends.

Mazatlan

Took us for food and shopping. It was very nice and there were many deals. The other group that was with us were having many drinks and having a great time.
