Sail Date: May 2016

This was our first cruise, and we love it. We cruised Alaska’s inside passage for 7 nights on HAL’s Nieuw Amsterdam. We couldn’t have chosen a better cruise line and ship for our introduction to cruising.

Embarkation at the Vancouver terminal took about 2hrs from the taxi drop off, through security and immigration, to finally opening our cabin door. Our balcony cabin was spacious, clean and well designed to maximize space and storage. Our luggage was already in the cabin so all we had to do was unpack, then head up to the Lido buffet for lunch.

I’d been told the food on HAL was sensational and it was certainly true. Yes, granted we hadn’t cruised before so we couldn’t compare it to other cruise lines, but we consider ourselves well versed in food and you could consider us fussy. We found the buffet had a plentiful selection that was fresh and inviting. The salad bar was a stand out.

Port Reviews

Glacier Bay

Scenic cruising on the ship. We were so lucky with the weather. Not a cloud in the sky, no wind, visibility for miles. The Captain did an amazing job at navigating in Glacier Bay.

Ketchikan

We explored Ketchikan ourselves. Lovely little town, very charming.

Juneau

We just walked around Juneau and did general sight seeing. We went up the Mount Robert tramway. Overall, it's OK. Not mind blowing. It's a town really, not so much a city. But people were friendly and it had a certain charm.
