Overall, our trip was average. Great weather, some decent ports, and had a good time mostly. Let me start with the positive - we found the platinum diningroom staff to be friendly and helpful. Our waiter learned our names on Day 1 and made us feel very welcomed each night. Our favorite was our drink server, who made himself known by a simple "yoohoo" shoutout. On the last day, he went to each table he served that week to specifically say thank you and good bye to each person he interacted with - outstanding! The diningroom food was pretty good - felt there were enough options to satisfy all 4 of us. Buffet food was OK - one thing I noticed on the last full day was fruit flies hovering over the fruit which turned me off but until then, I wasn't disappointed but not impressed either. The size of our room was good - we had 4 of us - the murphy bed that folded down from ceiling and use of the sofa. Beds weren't too bad - actually we slept pretty well. I felt there was sufficient closet space and the layout of the room was good. I liked having a balcony and will no longer book a cruise w/o one. I also liked the kiosks near Guest Services so I didn't have to stand in long lines to manage my account. We did not purchase the drink package on this cruise but felt the price of the drinks were not ridiculous...pricier than normal but comparable to other events like our state fair, concerts, and sporting events. We liked the punchliner comedy club - nice to see various comedians. The manager Shey was a bit annoying - she was trying to be funny each time prior to introducing the headliner but really after about the 3rd time I was over it...she needed to mix up her presentation because we heard the exact same thing like 6 times. Seating in the punchliner was nice but filled up very quickly. Large round couches that could sit like 8 were being "held" by one person sitting there that would not allow you to sit...not the cruise's fault but still was something that was frustrating because it was not just with one person or one occurrence.

Now the bad..

* I was livid the water slide was disassembled and that part of the ship sectioned off for construction. My teenagers had been looking forward to that. They got over it quickly but if I had smaller children it would have been a problem. We received a $5 off card for the arcade in lieu of which was a joke. There was no mention of that part of the ship being under construction when it was booked so a very bad decision on part of Carnival..especially for the week the kids in the north are out of school so LOTS of families/kids on the ship that week. It made it worse by hearing it was going to dry dock for 2 weeks...where they could have done that then.

Port Reviews

Amber Cove (Puerto Plata)

We did the 7 Falls Tour but not with the cruise ship - they wanted $80/pp and I didn't feel $320 was realistic. Instead, we rented a car, drove the 20 mins ourselves and paid $7/pp to do MORE than what the original excursion was.

St. Thomas

Again, decided not to book thru Carnival because their prices are exuberant. Instead, grabbed a air conditioned bus to Sapphire Beach for the day. $10/pp each way but was more reasonable than what the ship offered. We simply wanted a beach day and this option worked out well for us. Nice beach, pretty, snorkeling options, and a bar/grill onsite. No chairs but that was OK - we used our towels.

San Juan

We took the free shuttle to one of the Forts - traffic was a bit slow at that time but wasn't too bad. They dropped us off right at the Fort which was nice. We opted to grab a cab back for $15 - so we spent nearly nothing to spent a couple of hours at the Fort. We didn't have a lot of time in port anyway so this worked well. You can walk to both Forts from the port but it's all uphill.

Grand Turk

Total beach day - stayed right there. Carnival provides free umbrellas and chairs but they are literally stacked on top of each other...to the point you almost can't stand between chairs because they are inches apart. We paid $20 for two chairs/umbrella waterfront from an islander merchant and it was perfect. Right at the waters edge..spread out..no one right on top of us or in front of us. The girls spreadout their towels easily and hubby bought buckets of beer. Margaritaville was hopping and shopping was good. We can't wait to go back here.

Miami

We have been to Miami before as vacationers so had no need to do anything there. We just embarked and waited to board.
