Cabin: Grand Suite

We cruise about once a year and many of our cruises have been with Carnival. This cruise was a truly disappointing experience. We traveled with my parents so there were four of us in a Grand Suite. The room size and location was perfect for us. However the room itself was not up to the standard of a suite or even a regular cabin. There was dust/dirt covering the trim above the desk mirrors and on closet shelves. The couch was dirty. I used my own Lysol wipes to clean actual dirt and scuffs off of the couch. The carpet and bedspread were both threadbare, stained and generally gross. The Carnival Comfort Beds were anything but. They were lumpy and obviously way past needing to be replaced. The bidet (we never used it) had some kind of problem where it made a loud, gurgling noise...all day and all night. We told our cabin steward about it three times and three times he assured us he would have someone from maintenance fix it. It remained broken until the day we left. I understand the ship was getting ready to go into drydock. But, these are every day maintenance issues that should be ongoing. In fact, other than the new carpet on the stairs and elevator areas, it looked like the crew gave up on this poor ship a long time ago. Carnival should be ashamed of themselves for charging us what they did for this room.

I have some minor health issues and have been eating gluten free for the past year and a half per doctor's orders. I called Carnival ahead and let them know of my dietary concerns. I was told to go to my dining room on the day we board and speak with the maitre d. So I did. There I was told that he was not available and that I could either walk up to the Lido Deck to 'look around for a host' or, to just speak with my waiter that night. I opted to speak to my waiter. I was told that they "do not make special orders on the first night". Excuse me? Special Orders? I'm asking questions that anyone who works at a restaurant should be able to answer about the food on their menu. Obviously I know what foods are naturally gluten free. But I don't know if that's changed in the preparation and needed these questions answered. I was told to just 'order the chicken' and they would bring me the following night's menu so that 'from now on' they could help me. This is absolutely unacceptable. And the buffet was no better. Nothing is labeled and when you ask a crew member they don't (or they pretend they don't so they don't have to be bothered) understand what you're asking for. The food in the dining room was often cold by the time we got it. Not just mine but all of ours. Carnival offers no special desserts for gluten free eaters accept for the melting cake. Which is very good but not so good that I want it every single night. They have no gluten free dessert offerings at the buffet either. A side note: our last cruise was not on Carnival. We were also in a suite on that ship, they were extremely helpful with gluten free eating, foods on the buffet were labeled accordingly, they had a different GF dessert on the buffet and in the dining room every day and, this cruise on the Glory cost us just as much as that one. Lots of people have food allergies or eat gluten free, vegan, paleo, etc these days. Carnival needs to start paying more attention to this.

Construction was going on during our cruise as they have decided to add a water park to this ship. We aren't water slide people so the fact that it was already taken down didn't bother us. But, the construction noise was absolutely NOT the background music that we should have had to deal with. We're talking jackhammers and loud pounding while you're trying to 'escape' and enjoy the sunshine. Really a bad call on Carnival's part to have this going on while guests were on board.

Amber Cove (Puerto Plata)

Very nice! We tried the zipline and the stand up paddleboard. The pool area is big and clean. We enjoyed our time here!
