Our grandchildren are 5 and 8, and so we decided if we were ever going to do a Disney cruise we'd better go while the kids were young enough to really enjoy it. We bit the bullet and paid more for a 3 night Disney Bahamas cruise than we did for a 7 night Royal Caribbean Mediterranean cruise. We've cruised probably a dozen or more times so we're definitely not new to the cruise experience. Although we know nothing Disney comes cheap, we thought that paying twice the price would mean that we'd see a big difference in food quality, amenities, etc.......boy, were we wrong.
Embarkation went pretty smoothly. We got adjoining outside cabins and really appreciated that the bathrooms were 2 separate rooms in each cabin, 1 with shower and sink, the other with toilet and sink. That really helped when everyone was trying to get ready for dinner at the same time. Our room steward did a great job making sure we had what we needed, and giving us our nightly chocolates and towel animals.
Food at Cabanas and in Dining Rooms: this is where Disney really fell short - even the kids said they didn't really like the food that much and thought a recent Royal Caribbean cruise on the Freedom of the Seas was a lot better. Not much variety and preparation was just ok. No omelette or waffle stations - everything was pre-made. Even on our debarkation morning, the omelette I ordered was dried out, pre-made. RCCL also has several little coffee and snack shops and everything except for alcoholic drinks is included. Not so with Disney, and if you miss the 2:00 lunch deadline you'll only have pizza and burgers to eat at the grill unless you want to order room service.
If you've ever cruised any other cruise line, you've probably visited their private island too. This is no different and except for being a bit more developed, it's not really much better either.
