I will tell you just a lil bit about us before writing the review.  We are in our 40's, and traveled with our 2 teenage children, ages 14, and 15.  This was our 4th cruise, but it was our first with Princess.  I now know why Princess cruisers are so loyal.  We flew in to Vancouver the day prior to our cruise.  We stayed at the Pan Pacific hotel, which was not only a beautiful facility, but was extremely convenient as well.  It was connected to Canada Place, so just an elevator ride down had us at the pier.    We found the food prices at the hotel to be high, ($30.00 for a breakfast buffet) so we walked to the food court that was located across the street in the lower level of that building.  I can not comment on Vancouver itself, as we did not go anywhere except for in the hotel area.  The hotel offers an amazing service to cruisers.  When you are ready, you call the front desk, and they send somebody up to take your luggage to the ship.  This service is free, though we tipped generously for this convenience.    Our Princess documents stated that embarkation would start at noon.  The hotel staff informed us that it actually started at 11:00.  We arrived shortly before 11:00, and true to word, the process began precisely at 11!  The embarkation process went very smoothly.  We were in our room by 11:30.  The first person we met was of course our room steward Louis.  He was amazing.  We had 4 people in a mini suit (2 of course being teenagers) and he managed to keep our room tidy and fresh.  When we were introducing ourselves, I took the opportunity to put some of the valued CC information to work.  I asked if he made towel animals?  He came through for us!  We had an elephant and a monkey!  I know this is not standard for Princess, but those little things make the difference! Entertainment.  We did not go to all of the shows that were offered, but we did make it to 3 of them.  There was a comedian by the name of Cary Long.  He had been on the tonight show a couple times.  He was excellent!  I think he made everybody think he was talking about them!  Dan Bennett was another comedy show offered.  He was ok.  But not as enjoyable as Cary Long.  The Princess singers and dancers were ok as well.  I was glad we went to the show but it was nothing exceptional.  We did try to go out one evening to find a place to have a drink and dance though were unable to find a place that had the kind of music we enjoy dancing too.  The explorers lounge had disco...nope...sorry...not up my alley, and crooners had a piano player that from what I understand was very entertaining but not what we were looking for.  So we sat in the explorers lounge, had a drink (I highly recommend the Beverly Hills Iced Tea!!  YUM!) and enjoyed listening to the music. We were looking for the more classic rock, like Leonard skynard, Bob Segar...you get the idea. This in no way took away from the enjoyment of the cruise.  Teen Club.  We were very pleased with the teen club.  When the kids were younger, they were too clingy to take part in any of the kids club activities on board a ship.  They didn't want to be away from ol Mom and Dad.  It was completely opposite this cruise!  The first night we went there with them to sign them up so they could take part in the activities offered.  Princess actually had a booklet for each of the kids in the room when we arrived that gave a schedule for the activities offered.  The first time they went, they met some friends.  They did participate in some of the activities offered, but for the most part, they would use the teen club as a meeting place and go do other things.  The ship was big, but not so big that we wouldn't run into them frequently, and we also had set check in times throughout the day.  It worked well.  I called Princess a few days prior to sailing, and at that point there were 96 teenagers scheduled for this sailing.  At no time, did I see a teenager acting inappropriately.  They were all well manored.  Kudos to the parents for raising well behaved children.  You always worry about them behaving appropriately when you aren't looking.  I can honestly say, that when I was looking, all was well.  The last night, they had a farewell party for them.  They gave them all a tshirt to have everybody sign.  The kids are texting their new friends and converse on facebook.  FOOD!!  Wow!  I found the food to be outstanding in both the buffet and the dining room.  We had early traditional seating.  If we ever do a cruise like this again, even though we are on an early eating schedule, I would have to request late traditional seating or anytime seating.  We missed 3 of the meals in the dining room due to being in port and the scenic cruising that was scheduled.    Our wait staff was amazing!!  Fernando our head waiter, Preecha (I'm sure I spelled that wrong) our assistant waiter, and Jorge our wait staff supervisor made sure our needs and even wishes were all met!  For example...I again put my CC advice to good use.  I asked Fernando what night escargot would be served.  I didn't want to miss it!  He informed me that they were not serving it on the 7 day cruises, only on the 10 day or longer.  He saw the disappointment, and told me I needed to ask Jorge when he came around and he may be able to accommodate.  Of course I asked when Jorge came back, he took my table # and cabin # (still don't know why he needed my cabin #) and went to talk to the chef.  He returned with 2 questions for me.  1) How many orders do I want?  2) what night do I want it?  The next night I had 2 orders of escargot!!  I had actually ordered the 2nd order for our travel friends at our table so they could try it but as soon as they found out what it was, they wouldn't even try it!  No complaints!  I enjoyed both of them!  I found the ships public areas to be beautiful and well maintained.  All staff was friendly and courteous.  At no time did I see anybody that was rude.  Maybe a couple passengers but nothing that stood out as a scene.  This journey took us to Glacier Bay NP, as well as to College Fjords.  Both locations were outstanding though Marjorie Glacier was more active in Glacier Bay. We have some amazing pictures of the glacier calving.  Unfortunately, you can not reproduce the sound it makes during this process or even the sound it makes while advancing or retreating.  Unbelievable!  Spectacular!  Those words in my opinion are understatements!  The ship will stop for a while so you can watch the glacier calve, then turn around so the people on the other side can watch as well.  The disembarkation process was unbelievably organized.  To have to be responsible to get so many people to so many different locations, and do it so smoothly is amazing.      I will skip to the land tour part of our vacation, since they have a separate area to write port reviews.  We took part in the LA7 cruisetour that gave us 2 nights at Kenai Princess Lodge, 2 nights McKinley Princess lodge, 1 night Denali Princess, and 2 nights Fairbanks Princess.  I will be brief, I honestly enjoyed the cruise portion of this vacation much more than the land.  In my opinion, the Kenai lodge was my favorite of the Princess lodges we stayed at.  The cabins were large, (after coming from the ship it seemed that way) with enough room for 2 beds, a couch that folded out to a bed, and a woodburning fireplace in the corner.  My husband and I had to laugh though.  There was a skylight in the ceiling over the beds that was covered!  What kind of architect would put a skylight in a room, over the bed, in Alaska when it doesn't exactly get dark there!  nobody would get any sleep.  Obviously they figured that problem out fairly quickly as all the skylights over the beds were covered in all the cabins.  We took the Kenai NP tour out of Seward while we were there.  This was the best tour we did on land.  We saw tons of wildlife.  Puffins, sealions, sea otters, dahl porpoise, and several humpbacks that were putting on quite the show for us!!  We had one breach 4-5 times, and another one that was slapping its gigantic pectoral fin against the water over and over again.  Of course the beautiful show of the tail as well.  Can you say Photo op!!  Our journey continued to the McKinley Princess lodge.  On the way, we stopped in Anchorage.  What a disappointment.  After all the beautiful scenery along the way, I felt as though Anchorage was out of place.  Though we did have a nice meal while we were there, and we were able to walk a couple blocks to get a picture of the ididarod statue marking the start of the race.    The McKinley lodge was spread out quite a bit.  Though they did offer shuttles between the buildings that ran about every 7-8 minutes.  We were in building 19, which was just about a 5 minute stroll to the main building.  We did a trail ride on horses while we were there.  It was fun, though it wasn't spectacular.  It's something we try to do on each of our family vacations for the kids.  They love horses.  The beautiful mountain was not visible while we were there.  It was cloud covered, and hazy from the 73 wildfires that were burning in the area.    While we were there, we decided to take the shuttle into Talkeetna.  We thought we would like to get away from the lodge food and maybe save a little money in the process.  What a mistake!  The shuttle ride was $10.00 each round trip.  We ate at The Wildflower Cafe.  I do not recommend this.  When we got there, we realized that Princess isn't really that out of line with their food prices.  They took our order, my husband and daughter ordered hamburgers, I ordered crab cakes, and my son ordered a pizza.  15 minutes after she took our order, she brought the pizza and said that it was done first and didn't want it to get cold while we waited on the rest of our food.  30 minutes after she delivered the pizza, she brought the rest of the food.  I know we were not in a fast food resaurant, but 45 minutes to wait for your food?  My son said the pizza was ok, the rest of the food was fair as well.  Also, they filled our water glasses twice.  Once, when we arrived, and the 2nd time was about 5 minutes before we left.  Not exactly good service.  So, our bill for this meal was comparable to the Princess lodge prices, and then you tack the $40.00 on that it cost for us to get there, and we had a pretty pricey meal with poor service.  Unless you are really wanting to go to another gift shop, I recommend you skip Talkeetna.  Just my opinion.  Off to Denali lodge!  The lodge, like McKinley lodge, is spread out.  And again, they have the shuttles that run between buildings.  We were on the natural history tour and I would have considered it a bust, except for the fact that McKinley was clear as a bell that day!  She is an amazing sight to see!  The only wildlife that was seen, were some dahl sheep up on a hill sooooo far away that in the picture I took with my telephoto lens, you were barely able to make out what they are.  You can't predict the wildlife though.  Even our friends that went on the Tundra Wilderness tour weren't able to see any more than what we did.  You never know.    Fairbanks...The Princess facility there, is set up like a regular hotel.  Not spread out like the rest of them.  The restaurant there, provided very fast service.  I have to say, that Hunter, the waiter in the restaurant, was exceptional!  Very prompt, provided great service, didn't have to ask for anything.  He was on it!  I even had asked him some questions about the area, and if he didn't know the answer, he was able to get it for me!  The Eldorado Goldmine, and Sternwheel riverboat tour were included in the package.  We found the goldmine to be a little corny, but entertaining.  the Sternwheel we found to be boring, though many people said they enjoyed it.  Our last day in Fairbanks, we went over to the museum at the University.  I personally am not one to enjoy a museum, but I found this one to be quite good.  They have some really neat and unusual exhibits.  Overall I found that Princess does an excellent job with the cruisetour. I personally would cruise with Princess again, though I think if the option was available to us, we would do the land on our own instead of booking through the cruise line.  I'm glad we did for our first trip though.  The whole process, going from lodge to lodge was very organized.  Nothing confusing at all.  Alaska is a place you have to see to believe.  Any way you describe it would be an understatement.  I have always told my family that I only want to travel someplace once.  There is too much in this world to see to waste time going to the same place twice.  Well, I think I am about to eat my words, because if anybody asked me to go to Alaska again, I'd be there in a minute!!

Cabin Review

Mini-Suite with Balcony

Cabin MD

We were in minisuit C721.  It was located on the starboard side, aft.  We loved this location!  It had a great balcony, and was 3 doors down from the public aft viewing area that not many people knew about.  When we were in Glacier Bay, and College Fjords, we were out on the aft balcony while turned to the port side for viewing, and when they turned the ship for starboard viewing, we were able to quickly return to our balcony.   The cabin itself we clean.  It had some staining on the carpet, and the grout in the tub/shower was in need of a good bleaching.  The bathroom vanity area was a nice size.  It was large enough for my husband to shave and for me to apply my make up at the same time.  BUT...it was not large enough for my daughter and myself to apply make up at the same time.  My daughter took over the desk area and turned it into her vanity area.  Which worked well.  The hair dryer provided was located next to the desk area.  In my opinion, it didn't get hot enough nor did it have enough power.  Though it may have just been the one in our cabin.  I felt that the hairdryers in the lodges were much better.  I have seen many negative comments reguarding the mattresses.  yes, they are deffinately in need of being replaced.  There is a very obvious valley/dip to the center of them from constant use.  Though I did not find the need to have it replaced, nor even the need for an egg crate.  I slept well.  This is coming from a person that sleeps on a Temperpedic mattress at home so I know what a quality mattress feels like.  The actual space in the room was tight with 4 people though it was doable.  It became clutttered very easily with 2 teenagers in it.  Since it wasn't like we spent large quantities of time in there it worked for us.  If we were confined to that space, it would have been a different story.  Closet space was addequate.  Though we used every square inch of the space provided.  A little more would have been nice.  I know this probably isn't possible, but it would have been nice to have another private area for changing.  If you had one in the bathroom, then the only changing area available was the small open area in the closet.  A door or curtain would have been nice so the other people in the room wouldn't walk in on you.
