We knew that this two day trip from Tromso to Kirkenes was all about the location and the chance of seeing the Northern Lights, so we were thrilled when we had great viewing the first night on the ship. The captain announced when the lights were visible, and everyone ran to the decks. The North Cape excursion in Honningsvag was well organized and a great experience. As we knew this ship was more of a ferry vs a true cruise ship, our rather spartan cabin on deck five was perfectly acceptable.
What we didn't plan for was the rudeness of the crew and the horrible food in the dining room. First, the majority of the crew members were downright rude. They were annoyed with questions, didn't seem to know their jobs, and were generally upset that they even had to be there. Other passengers we met also commented on the crew's attitude. Secondly, the food was terrible. Since we booked just a two night cruise via the main website, we paid an outrageous $300 US for two people to eat dinner for two nights. The first night there was no choice at all of food, and we were served horribly prepared Arctic Char that tasted very very fishy (not fresh at all). Even the second night, when there was a seafood buffet, the food was barely edible. The crab legs looked great, but were cooked so poorly (or were so old), that the crabmeat wouldn't even come off of the shell.
Please note the food in the cafe was actually really good. We felt very duped to have purchased the dinner in the dining room.
Our cabin on deck five was perfectly acceptable. Two small beds, plenty of storage and a small bathroom. Do not expect a fancy cruise ship, as that is not what this cruise is all about (although I hear the newly renovated ships are beautiful).
