We have always had good experiences on Holland America and were concerned when we read the many negative reviews of the Koningsdam on Cruise Critic. Our cruise was wonderful and we only agreed with the critics on a few factors.
We drove from Sarasota, FL to Ft. Lauderdale the day before sailing. We left our car at the hotel and were transferred to the ship the next day. The transfer was delayed by rain and the crowding at the port given that there were eight ships departing that day. We finally got to the ship about 3PM. Embarkation went quickly since we were 2 of 3 people in the facility by that time. Even the photographers had closed up and left by then!
CABIN We had a verandah cabin on Deck 5 Aft. We like this area because it is close to the elevators to the Lido and the Dining Room. (My wife does not walk well and is not good on stairs). The cabin was in perfect condition but did appear to be slightly smaller than comparable cabins on HA ships. There was plenty of storage space and we had no equipment or maintenance problems. The bathroom had the best shower ever but the toilet critics were right on this one. We are not big people so had no problems but a 6'5" person would be uncomfortable on the toilet. The cabin attendants were perfect as always and we never lacked for service or a friendly greeting in the hall.
