Norwegian Breakaway Review

Great Value with Gratuities and Drink Package - 8 Islands and 6 Days at Sea

Review for the Caribbean Cruise on Norwegian Breakaway

If it is convenient for you to sail out of NYC, you don't mind a few sea days on both ends of the cruise in the North Atlantic, and you would like to visit 8 Caribbean Islands on one cruise - this is it. NCL has made this a very affordable cruise, especially when they include free gratuities and a drink package (other options - such as dining package, excursion credits, or internet time were available as well). We really enjoy the outdoor dining at some of the specialty restaurants. Over 10 years, we have seen a reduction in staff, meal variety, etc.; however, there is still great value for the price. Staff was super friendly and attentive. Food was excellent (served hot/cold as appropriate) even though not as much variety as in the past. Sorry to see the Ala Carte Margarittaville replace the Complimentary custom burger, sandwich, salad bar outside eating area on deck 16. Very low use of a great outdoor lunch location now that you have to pay. It was still available for FREE breakfast. Also sorry to see Ala Carte pricing on most of the other Specialty restaurants - but there is a lot less wasted food being left on tables. Nice kids area with large water slides. Small pools. Smoking area on pool deck is too close to the kids pool. Smoking outside of Maltings and in Casino filters into Maltings and La Cucina and hallways. Cirque show was excellent and they had some afternoon performances by other entertainers in the Cirque "tent" - this is a great, comfortable venue. Make reservations before you go on the cruise for restaurants and entertainment - lets you skip the line waiting without reservations. Entertainment was OK - the best was "Oh What a Night" 4 Season Tribute and "Burn the Floor".

Cabin Review

Balcony Stateroom

Cabin BC

Comfortable cabin with small balcony - two chairs and small table filled it up. Decent size bathroom. Nice bath products provided. Comfortable bed. Decent size flat screen TV with limited channels (BBC, CNBC, MSNBC, Fox News with ship selection of TV Show, Movie and Sports - Pay Movies available. All the typical ship-oriented channels. Small mini-fridge. Hair dryer. Coffee maker (we did not use). Decent amount of storage and closet space. Very small safe. Plenty of hot water. Maintenance had to fix clogged shower drain, but OK after that. Very quiet when we sailed - people on both sides of us were quiet.

Port Reviews

San Juan

Nice walk up the hill to two forts on the other side (bring your US National Park Passes). Also, nice walk, especially at Christmas time when it is lit up, along the promenade beneath the city/fort walls to the left after you arrive on shore. Other than that, not much to see or do.

St. Thomas

A bit of an easy walk from the port to the town. You can amuse yourself in the shops at Havensight if you don't want to walk or take a cab to town.

St. Maarten

We love this place. A bit of an easy walk from the ship. Couple of nice bars under palm trees as you just get to town. Long boardwalk with beach on one side. Go up one street parallel to the beach for shopping. Lots of shops.

Dominica

OK port. Don't wander too far off tourist areas - someone from ship was mugged, knifed fairly seriously when they went too far into town.

Barbados

A bit longer of an easy walk into town, but a beautiful promenade along sea wall for most of the way. Fish market at end of promenade. Interesting, bustling down town area. Some real department and grocery stores. Felt safe in tourist areas.

St. Lucia

Quick walk off boat into town. Nice area at port, but not much else.

St. Kitts (Port Zante)

Very nice shopping, restaurant, casino area at port. Bigger every time we go there. Definitely an up and coming port. Watch out for the monkeys. They take things out of purses and they bit someone we met on the ship afterwards.

New York (Manhattan)

As platinum members, our embarkation process with quick and easy. A small wait until the ship was ready for boarding about 11:30am.
