Grandson's First Cruise!

Sail Date: May 2009
Destination: Alaska
Embarkation: Seattle

Our grandson just turned 12 years old and we figured that he was getting to the age where he wouldn't want to be in a cabin with us much longer, so we splurged and took him on this cruise.  It was a wonderful experience.  Great crew, lots of fun for all of us.  The kids spent lots of time in the pool even when the temp was not ideal.  Alaska is great.
If you get a chance to take this cruise during the spring/summer, pack for both heat and cold.  The temps were in the 80's in some ports!

The food was very good.  Unfortunately, many of the restaurants charged a surcharge, which got rather expensive after a few days.  The sushi bar was great and we splurged on that.

Our cabin stewards were not as good as the ones we had experienced on previous NCL cruises.  We had to ask for towels on many occasions and often didn't get our daily "newsletter".

The ship is new and it is very nice.  The jogging deck More is rather small, but the gym is nice.  Unfortunately, unless you paid to take a class, you couldn't get into the classroom for stretching or yoga most of the time because they were holding other "events" in there.

Overall, it was a good cruise and a wonderful experience seeing all of the glaciers! Less

Port and Shore Excursions

Juneau was wonderful. Took a shuttle out to Mendenhall Glacier for $7.00 each, which seemed like a real deal. Unfortunately, we lost track of time and had to take a taxi back at around $40, so it got expensive. The last shuttle back is at 6:00, so DON'T MISS IT.

The waterfall at Mendenhall was great. It was a sunny day and we could pick up pieces of glacial ice floating in the water. The visitor's center looked wonderful, but by the time we realized we had missed the shuttle, we didn't get much time to look around in it.

Our favorite excurision was in Ketchikan on the Lighthouse, Totems and Eagles tour run by Captain Rob Holston. The excursion is on a very nice cabin cruiser boat that takes you out to the lighthouse, around the totem park and to tons of eagles nests. The food provided was great and the captain was very entertaining. Our grandson even got to captain the boat for a few minutes! I think he is in love with Alaska now.

Took the train excursion (least expensive one) and it was great. It was very hot that day, so everyone was somewhat uncomfortable. The views are fantastic and it is well worth the time and money.

Places to shop were also great. Nice jewelry. Not enough time to really look around as much as we wanted to.

Wanted to go to the gardens, but it was cold and getting dark. Ended up downtown instead. We walked around, had a root beer shake, visited the hotel lobby, and took a water taxi back. Recommend taking a taxi or water taxi downtown rather than paying for an excursion.
