This cruise suited our dates, and length of time. I also thought for a first cruise, a bigger ship would be best. Princess also appeared to have a consistent acceptable standard, and generally very good reviews. The Golden Princess is an older ship and I was pleasantly surprised at how presentable most areas were for its age, but this ship needs a renovation and we were not the only people who thought so. Our mini-suite cabin was immaculate and clean, and steward service excellent. I did not choose the position of our cabin on the Dolphin deck, but can vouch for this level as in having uninterrupted views from balcony to the water and for being extremely quiet.

The coffee was the International Cafe was top notch and of a generous portion. We could not find fault with any dining or bar service. Preferring the dining rooms for meals, we only ate at the buffet twice and while the food was just OK (I felt like I was eating in a very busy shopping centre food court), it was the musty smell coming from either the carpet or surfaces that was very off putting. I was hoping our two available dining rooms for anytime dining would be different from one another in food and decor, but being almost identical, this same environment every night became a bit tiring. The food was very good, with small portions. We ate at the Crown Grill one night, and it was my favourite meal of the entire cruise, the exquisite food and the setting. I was disappointed with the Sabatini restaurant and the food, it just felt like an extension of the dining rooms. The food at the International Cafe is set up for those who want sweet, unhealthy fare. I was disappointed that I could not get a savoury healthy slice of loaf or muffin with my coffee and had to resort to a quiche or salad instead.

We expected more roving musical or performing arts entertainment throughout the day, of which there was none. Only three theatre performances had the wow factor, and the general music provided on the ship is definitely in favour of those born in the 40's and 50's. We did not do shore excursions but explored on our own, and enjoyed these days. The general procedures getting on and off the ship were smooth and with good organisation. We did not travel with children. Yes, we will cruise again, but not for a while. I will most likely look at another cruise line.

Mini-Suite with Balcony

Cabin MD

Clean and presentable. The bathroom could do with a renovation, I actually expected more of a mini-suite. Plenty of room for two. I enjoyed the artwork prints on the wall. Bed was comfortable. Pillows are too soft.
