Went on a two week cruise on the Majesty to the Canaries with Thomson for Xmas and my 70th birthday 2016. On an earlier Thomson cruise in 2016 on the Celebration the cabin was so dilapidated and with the smell of engine fumes that we got money off this Xmas cruise. This time chose a cabin towards the front to avoid risk of engine fumes and also a higher deck in the hope of a better cabin – cost more money of course. Requested a double bed configuration when booking on-line. When we got to the cabin two single beds had been pushed together. The cabin was so small it was impossible to access the bed without climbing over the bottom. Had to get them put it back to two singles. Cabin was so small that two people couldn’t pass each other without agreeing who would move first. There was very little space for the luggage so had to use the floor. The shower and toilet broke down twice. We couldn’t even shower on the evening of my birthday. The lovely people on reception were totally arrogant and contemptuous of guests in general and when we asked if we could change cabin.

On the evening before Xmas the cabin lady knocked with a gift. It was a paper plate covered in cling film. It had some biscuits, nuts (you were expected to crack with your teeth?) and a mouldy orange. I have the photo. This is what Thomson thinks of guests. The Observatory bar was very nice but when a musician came on the music was too loud to hear yourself speak and we were driven out along with other guests we were speaking to. We spoke to the Cruise Director who said he had other complaints and was dealing with it. He did nothing but that’s Thomson management for you.

They make a great show of hygiene and your hands are sprayed every time you enter a dining room. However at breakfast we noticed them piling up the used and unused napkins from the tables together. Then they held up each one in turn to check if it looked clean enough. If it did it was reused. My wife got one of these one morning. The food was mediocre but always with large quantities available. We tended to eat off the ship at lunchtime and the waiters couldn’t work out why we wanted so little at dinner. The Xmas day meal was turkey but if your eyes were closed it could have been anything.
