This is my 4th cruise, my 4th with Celebrity, the 2nd one at Christmas and, for the first time, I was disappointed. The room was shabby - see below - and the dining room food was just about ok, although the service was great - even if a bit too obviously chasing good ratings at the end of it! The buffet had little variety during the day and became very repetitive. Lots of - lovely - Indian lunches but no Mexican that I saw.

It was a Christmas cruise and they had had norovirus on board the week before. I understood from another passenger they had had it since October(!) and the staff all seemed a bit tired and fed up with it and the extra work it created for them. Having to restrict self service was clearly a strain for staff and guests so this did not help. A full ship also seemed to create a lot of tension and difficulty with select dining too. A lot of guest tempers seemed to be frayed and the staff were less able to deal with it due to their own stress.

The evening entertainment was not very tempting and felt much inferior to previous cruises we had been on. The stand out for us was Band Mates, an unlikely 3 piece in the Rendezvous lounge but the success of that depended largely on the willingness of guest participation which was a bit patchy. We have been spoiled twice by previous cruises and having Alejandro! as our cruise director but hearing this one talking about staff whingeing as he walked through the ship seemed to reflect the overall atmosphere. Not overly joyful!

Cabin Review

Family Ocean View with Balcony

Cabin FV

Very disappointing. The sofa bed in this room is effectively unusable with 'undulating', seriously worn and noisy springs and a paper thin mattress. My student daughter manged to get by for a week on the other single mattress & sleeping on the floor. The sofa's themselves were old and uncomfortable so we didn't even sit on them. I've informed guest relations and the attendant was fully aware of this issue but I have no confidence this will have made any difference. The bathroom is looking tired and old with cracked floor grouting, mould in many areas/corners and the shower head flops. The attendant was lovely but, for the first time ever I have heard noise, and a lot of it, from the next door cabin, mostly from 2 very noisy young boys who screamed and ran around late into the night and should really never have been 'contained' on a ship. Since these rooms are sold as family rooms, I would beware. I've no idea if the room configuration makes for thinner walls between these particular two cabins - 7201 & 7199 - but it is an issue, even down to the door slamming shut on exit and entry. We also had serious soot land on the balcony from the ship's funnel. We overlooked the veranda to the 'penthouse suite' and had to endure kids throwing bottles overboard and smoking. We also had to hear the people above conversing with 'neighbors' about how great their day had been and how dysfunctional their families were, due to the openness of the balconies. Towards then end of the cruise we were also affected by noise from late night music blaring out from the sunset deck. My initial excitement at securing this room on a late available guarantee has left me disappointed. Despite the slight extra space, privacy screen and larger balcony, I wouldn't choose this room again and was disappointed that we were unable to transfer to any other room due to the ship being 'full'.

Port Reviews

San Juan

Took an extra day here on the way out. Loved it and exceeded our expectations.

St. Lucia

Decided on this last minute but only one space left on cruise option. Did it ourselves so had to pay $160 for a taxi 'tour' to get us there. That was interesting in many ways although but we also stopped at different places where we were constantly asked for money. St Lucia is an island struggling but the people mostly offered something in return for dollars.

St. Maarten

Very busy and felt very touristy and the people hassled us a LOT. The water taxi was great and we found a place to swim near the water taxi stop.

St. Kitts (Port Zante)

Lovely port but very hot. Lots of very local colour and it felt like a place that was being lived in and it had a lot of life. Not hassled at all and there was lots of music, street food and friendly locals. A very real slice of Caribbean life.

St. Thomas

Loved this pretty port and the highlight was the sky ride cable car. Well worth the little walk and ride up. Fabulous view and very friendly people.
