This was our first holiday season cruise and our fourth with HAL. We loved this ship and this trip. It was our first on the Koningsdam (we've sailed on the Statendam, Westerdam and Zuiderdam as well) and yes, it's somewhat different that these other vessels. That said, the changes are for the good. HAL has to make these changes to keep up in the industry - not just cruising but travel overall. The demographic is changing and if they don't keep up with the Jones', their future will be facing some rough seas.
The vessel is beautiful, with some of the favourite spots from other ships, and some new ones too. The staff seemed proud of the ship and the service we received was typical of the fleet - friendly, courteous and professional. There are some that have said otherwise, but I'm a believer that you get back what you exude. Guests should also take the onus upon themselves to learn about the trip and vessel, so their expectations can actually be met. Oftentimes, when someone doesn't make the effort to know what they are paying for, they are disappointed and is shared among their fellow travellers.
We enjoyed our Verandah cabin. It had plenty of storage including room under the bed for storing the suitcases. The dining room was beautiful, and we had the late evening seating time at 8:15 pm. We LOVED the Tamarind and tried to get in later in the cruise but it was already reserved for the evening. The ports were great - our first time at each. Lots of kids (500) on this trip.
