Leaving in January it is a bit chilly in Galveston. We were ready for the warm rays of sunshine.
This was the final cruise out of Galveston before the Magic was relocating to FL. The crew would have a much needed 3 days with no passengers and they were giddy with excitement!
Embarkation wasn't fabulous. We were given time slots but it still felt like cattle being herded onto the ship and it took longer than was expected. Security was a little overboard (pun not intended). Gosh, I miss the Port of Houston and the ease it afforded.
Our cabin was located just around the corner from the elevators. When you turned to the left you looked straight at my door. It was strange being right out in the open and not down the hallway a bit, but it was so handy! We chose balcony guarantee and have always been pleased with our location. Even with this in a busy area we only heard voices, momentarily, twice. It was at the very back of the forward section. Our cabin steward was quiet and ready for a break but he kept our room lovely and was gracious.
My review of Key West is listed in my full review. Go to the Southernmost Point, see Highway 1, eat conch fritters at Hog's Breath Saloon. If you don't feel like walking take a tour on the Conch Train.
The port area isn't appealing. Same old trinkets just not as many. We rented a cab and went to Junkanoo Beach. Driver was great. He wouldn't visit much but his driving skills didn't make me nervous and for that, I was thankful. Cost a around $3. for use of the beach. Water temps were perfect!
Didn't love this town. Didn't take an excursion but did walk around town. The basket market is filled with women loudly begging you to buy their wares. They're the same at every turn. Ate at Athena's. Totally over priced and beware of crime on the island.
We heard others talk of a ferry taken near Senior Frogs over to Atlantis' Beach. It would've been worth $7. to get away to the sandy, sunny beach. Shopping prices for jewelry looked better than at other ports.
