I want to preface my comments by saying that we did enjoy the cruise, we always do. However, Princess continues to base the poorest of their ships (Sun, Sea and Dawn) in Australia and, in comparison with how they do things on non-Australian based cruises, it is second best. On this cruise there was no scholarship at sea program, a feeling that the cruise director staff were going through the motions and an increasing emphasis on pay as you go at the expense of previously free venues and services. There was not even the traditional parade of the Bombe Alaska at the end of the cruise.

This was our first cruise as an elite member of princess so we were looking forward to all the perks. Embarkation was a breeze. We were on board in very quick time and had ample time to settle in before sail away. The Sun Princess is showing its age but is still a well kept ship. For the first time we tried a mini suite noting that the balcony suites on the Sun, Sea and Dawn are the smallest on the fleet. The mini suite was well appointed and provided plenty of room. The only odd thing was the design of the bathroom/ vanity area which left very little area around the sink area for the storage of bits and pieces. Nonetheless, there was a separate shower, spa bath, and lots of marble.

Our first port of call was Albany, however, we were only there for a short time (12:00pm to 3:30pm) as we had to leave a few hours earlier than planned to get ahead of a low pressure system that was chasing us.
