We had waited for a long time to go on a cruise to the Western Caribbean to experience the jungle, visit Mayan ruins and snorkel in crystal clear waters. The weather was great and the waves smooth. We got the beverage package and enjoyed many different mix drinks, something we would not have done otherwise. Our room was pleasant and our bathroom big as we had booked a mini suit with a bathtub. Only the balcony was very small, unlike our mini suite with Celebrity. When we sailed with them two years prior we also received a special room service menu which came in handy when I got sick and had to stay in the room. NCL is now charging $8 for every order into the room - ridiculous!
This type of penny pinching was evident in many places on the ship. Most specialty restaurants now charge a la carte. We would usually go to the French Restaurant at least once a cruise, but we did not. Most of the Specialty restaurants had few visitors and some places like Margaretville never had one person (at least from what I saw). I hope NCL management will become aware of this problem soon.
The worst part of the cruise was the cruise director. She is Chinese and even the life boat drill was impossible to understand. I am also a non-US citizen, so I feel I can say this. In this industry, people have to understand you. And just reciting the next part of the program is not entertainment. I wish I would have heard some excitement or a funny remark. I used to teach college and I felt like someone was giving a paper or a boring seminar. Anyway, hopefully they will send her somewhere else.
Miami port is easy to navigate and lots of ships.
I was disappointed by the new island. Snorkeling was non-existent and no wildlife. If you like laying on the beach all day it's great, but otherwise boring. The highlight is the butterfly house.
