In from the cold: first time cruise, first time Alaska: Island Princess

We are Australians, temporarily living in Vancouver, and took a 12 day Princess Island cruise land tour to Alaska from Vancouver departing 25 May 2009.  We have never cruised before although one of us sails regularly and our at sea experience was limited to previously chartering a catamaran in Australia and a yacht in the Caribbean BVIs.

Itinerary: embark Vancouver, sea, Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway, sea, disembark Whittier, 2 nights Princess McKinley, 1 night Princess Denali, 1 night Fairbanks (Pike's Waterfront Lodge) and 1 night Seattle SeaTac DoubleTree (flight Fairbanks - Seattle included in package).
