Norwegian Jade had just arrived in the US after a summer Mediterranean season and apparently is showing its age. The ship is scheduled to go into dry dock in early 2017 and that will not be a moment too soon. Since its entry into service in 2006 as the Norwegian ship in Hawaii and subsequent renaming in 2008 you would think that there would have been time to remove most of the Hawaiian decorations and motif. Not so. But that’s not the reason for my mediocre review.

One item stands out in particular. On other lines we have cruised, we were given little fold out pieces of paper that had deck plan layouts of at least the public areas. Several decks only have staterooms and do not need such a format. Norwegian provided a full sized piece of paper that does show where various restaurants and public rooms are located but it is only a side view with the location shown vaguely where the place is – forward, midships or aft. It does not show how to get there or, in the case of Norwegian Jade the incredible maze like passageway situation of Deck 8. You can’t get there from here! Please, someone pay attention and provide proper deck layouts.

Dining was great. Because we were in a Penthouse suite we got to eat breakfast and lunch at Cagney's. It was a fixed menu and the same for each day but because of the variety, there was enough to choose a different meal every day. As you would expect, the service and the food was excellent.

Cabin Review

Penthouse with Large Balcony

Cabin SE

This Penthouse Suite is located as far forward as you can go on deck 10. It is directly under the bridge and is quite spacious with a huge balcony from which you can see where you are headed at all time. If you look at the ships web cam, that is the same view from the 8 cabins facing forward on deck 9 and 10. The bed is queen sized and cannot be separated into two twins.

As you would expect, the furnishings are fabulous and there is enough storage space for four travelers. Suitcases can be stored under the bed. Curtains can be drawn to keep the bed dark when others might want to get up and about.

There is a coffee/espresso machine but don’t be fooled, it only brews coffee or provides hot water for tea. There is no espresso or cappuccino capability.

The TV is excellent but has limited channels. Broadcast TV is limited to BBC World Wide, CNBC, MSNBC and Fox News. Soccer is also available as well as movies and the usual web cam and other ship related information. You MUST have channel 23 on if you want to hear announcements. You cannot hear the announcements with the door closed.

We chose this room for this cruise because of it's forward facing location. That is the UP side. The DOWN side is that is so far forward, it's quite a "hike" to almost any other venue on the ship.
