This was our second river cruise, having done the Danube River from Budapest to Passua with Viking 2 yrs ago. On that cruise a waiter suggested doing the Rhine River and many friends suggested that we look into Uniworld. We do think Uniworld is a notch up in so many ways and will definitely look at them first when choosing another river cruise.

The difference was described to us like a Cadillac vs a Chevrolet or linen vs plastic. We loved our Viking-Danube River cruise but the Uniworld service, attention to details, cleanliness, friendly staff, "open bar" , no tipping policy all added up to a fantastic week.I would also add that we love cruising late in October--crowds are down, weather is cool but comfortable and on this cruise the ship was 3/4 full. I'm not sure it made a huge difference but service was so prompt and staff was easy to engage in fun conversation and this really added to our experience.

The cabin itself was very roomy--we were on mid-level, no balcony but huge windows. The beds were very comfortable and we were not bothered by any outside noise from above next door or engine noise.

Port Reviews

Speyer

Tour of the winery and tasting of excellent Riesling wine made for a very nice afternoon.

Basel

We did not dock in Basel because of construction on a lock but rather in Breisach. from there we were bused to 2 Alsatian villages that were not too damaged by WWII

Both were amazing and we were really glad we opted for this tour.

Strasbourg

In the morning we did a canal boat ride tour around Strasbourg that was gorgeous and then a bus ride into the Black Forrest. Fun stop at a family owned cuckoo clock store where the 78 yr old owner met the bus, put on a brief demonstration of his wood carving skills and shared his humor. Then off to an amazing outdoor museum--restored Black Forrest working farm & village. Long day but worth it!!
