On the spur of the moment, I found a cruise on the Triumph leaving from Charleston, SC and so we decided we'd take it.  Not having to fly somewhere was our deciding factor.  Our plan was to drive to Charleston so that we would arrive about 3:30 p.m.-4 p.m. since we couldn't park our car until then.  We had been told by Carnival that embarkation wouldn't begin until 7 p.m.  Parking cost for a 5-day cruise is $80.00.  Much to our surprise, we were told we wouldn't have to pay because we had a handicap placard.  That was great.  And, secondly, we were informed that we could go ahead and embark. When we have cruised in the past we have always had a balcony cabin or a suite, but at the time I booked this an oceanview was the only type cabin available.  The cabin was a tiny bit larger than a standard balcony cabin because there was no balcony.  The cabin was nice, very clean and we were quite comfortable in it except for not having a balcony.  My husband made the statement that from here on out we will never cruise without a balcony.  We felt very "closed in."  We met our cabin steward, Gusti, and he was quite helpful.  He kept our cabin clean and managed to provide us with extra ice as requested.  He was always friendly and spoke when he saw us, but that was about it.As for the food, what can I say.  Some good; some not so good.  I realize this is a very subjective area, but I was not impressed at all with the food.  The first and second evening, it took us two hours to eat and that is way too long.  The menu looked like it had been pared back some and there weren't as many selections from which to choose.  On the last evening, someone in our party was celebrating her birthday and our waiter brought her a birthday cake.  It was delicious.  A couple of times we tried the pizza and it was undercooked both times, so we didn't try it again.\Even though the dress code has been relaxed somewhat, I was still surprised to see what some people were wearing in the dining room.  They were downright tacky.  I mean there were women in there in short shorts and halter tops.  I couldn't believe the Maitre'd allowed them to even enter the dining room.  I guess some people just don't have any class. Our two ports of call were Freeport and Nassau.  Since we had been to both on a previous cruise, we did not go into Freeport.  However, we did go into Nassau; from there to Paradise Island and the Atlantis casino.  We were back on the ship by 12:30 p.m.  Both days in port we had really bad thunderstorms in the afternoon, but they didn't last long.  According to the cruise director, there were 542 children onboard.  I say kudos to the Camp Carnival staff who must of had all of those youngters.  The children were never a problem and were not running wild.  There were a number of young people onboard and I figured they would be routy, but they weren't.  Everyone seemed very well behaved. When we returned to Charleston on Saturday morning, we opted to self-assist with our luggage and we were the second deck called.  Debarkation was a breeze.  We went right through customs, out the door, into a shuttle and straight to our car.  We were home by 10:30 a.m.We had a terrific time but have decided not to cruise on Carnival for quite some time.
