The cruise was booked a year ago because the itinerary looked interesting, the price was attractive and I've always wanted to see the Northern Lights (at the third time of trying).
The ship: Far larger than the Marco Polo, which I've used twice before, and twice as many passengers. The facilities were very good. The cabin we had was spacious enough and kept spotless by a very caring maid. Restaurants were clean and fresh and the crew always attentive. The food was excellent - not 'fine dining' every time but tasty and plenty of it. The self-service bistro was available if Restaurants are not your thing. It can be daunting, at first, sitting with strangers. Dinner was allocated seating from day 1. However, lunch was a different matter and hereby lies my first gripe. Why did the staff insist on filling up tables as people arrived ? There were times when I just didn't want to talk to different strangers some days. I may be convenient for the staff but I found it disconcerting particularly as some passengers had a very different political stance to yours. . We should be allowed to sit with whom we want.
The bars were very good and the prices reasonable. Thee could have been more comfortable seating for those long days at sea.
Very spacious. Kept spotlessly clean by the cabin crew. The shower and toilet were faultless.
Lovely town. Good art galleries. It is worth getting a 'Bergen Card' from the tourist office (some hotels sell it). It gets you into some galleries for free as well as all buses etc. The funicular (?) is a must - free with card. Great view at the top.
