We scheduled this TA Cruise because we were visiting Italy for the 1st time for 8 nights before the Cruise. In the past our TA Cruise was 1st and then the vacation after the Cruise. This was much nicer being able to rest and relax at the end of our vacation.
I had chosen a Hotel close to the train station and it was easy to take the train to the Port of Civitavecchia and it only cost 4 Euros ! However, as other people have mentioned, when we got to the train station at the Port, it was very difficult to carry your luggage down 30 or so steps, go under the train tracks and carry your luggage up those 30 stairs again. My Wife and I could manage ok, but, it was difficult (I'm 70) and I can't see how older elderly people could have managed ! I went back to help a woman in a wheelchair, but, she already had help from another passenger. I don't know how she got up or down those stairs. I can't understand how Princess and other Cruise Lines or the Train Station haven't developed some type of plan to help their customers out ! It's an accident waiting to happen or worse yet a heart attack from an elderly person. I would have paid a few Euros to have someone help with our luggage.
Once, outside the station a cab took us to the ship for 5 Euros. It was well worth it. If I had known where I was going, it probably would have taken us at least 1/2 hour with 2 large suitcases and a carry on.
