Sail Date: May 2009

This was a one-off sailing from San Juan to Brooklyn with stops in St. Thomas, Antiqua and Bermuda.  It does a similar cruise in reverse in October.  This was my 6th Princess cruise and my first on Caribbean Princess.  It was recently renovated to include the Piazza in the atrium, including the wonderful International Cafe and Vines winebar as well as the Crown Grill.  These new features which I already experienced aboard the Crown Princess) are welcome additions. My cabin was on Riviera (deck 14) #312 which is an inside handicapped cabin.  It is spacious and would be comperable in area to a suite.  There was plenty of storage space.  A 3-door wardrobe plus 2 extra wide nightables on each side of the beds; each containing 4 nice sized drawers.  There were additional drawers at the bureau.  The mattress was very comfortable.  The pillows, however, weren't very firm and it took a bunch of them to be of any use. The problem is the noise from the service entrance and service elevators which is next to the stateroom but not shown on the deck plans.  Every morning when the housekeeping carts would roll off the elevators and down the linoleum floor there was quite a racket.  Fortunately, I do bring earplugs when I travel so it didn't interfere with my sleep. The food was very good in the dining, although there have been some cutbacks.  I tried to take as many meals as possible in the dining room. No meal was a disappointment there (with the exception of the lobster on formal night #2). Only one is open for breakfast and lunch and the hours are limited (7-9 for breakfast and 12-1:30 for lunch).  I find this to be unacceptable considering people are on vacation and shouldn't be regimented for their meals, especially when evening dining goes on for 4 hours or more in the dining rooms.  The Horizon Court and Cafe Caribe buffets were not so impressive.  I much preferred the selection, limited as they were at the new International Cafe. I would add that I purchased the coffee card at the cafe for $24. which entitled me to 15 special coffees plus all the regular brewed coffee, hot choclate and tea for the cruise.  The special coffees average $2.00 so you definately get your money's worth.  And the coffee is wonderful and better than the coffee served at the Horizon Court which isn't brewed from what I understand.  I also understand that the card is reuseable if you didn't finish all 15 coffees.   I also enjoyed the pizza and (forgive me) hot dogs offered on the Lido Deck.  The one time I needed to have dinner in Cafe Caribe was a big disappointment.  The only other casual dining I did in the evening was for the seafood buffet on boarding night.  Lobster claws were not offered this time but I found what was offered was very good.  I understand that the ice cream bar is now offering free soft-serve ice cream.  However, I stuck to the hard pack ice cream served in the dining room at lunch and dinner.  These are home made flavors and are wonderful.  Almost the consistency of gelato.  One everning I joined a group of 12 for dinner at the Crown Grill, which was outstanding.   The black and blue onion soup is amazing.  So was the veal chop.  As I said to my friends, "If you didn't see me gnawing at the bone then you know there was more than plenty enough meat on that chop!"I found the staff to be hardworking but overworked, which meant they weren't able to be as attentive and thorough.  We never saw the assistant waiter at our dinner table.  Everything was left to our waiter, including refilling water glasses.  At times, he would be so confused he'd forget who had tap water and who had San Pelegrino in their glasses.  Another indication of the cutting back the cruise lines are now doing in order to save money.Entertainment on the ship was good.  I saw one production show which was not the best one they do but it was still enjoyable.  I enjoyed the music more, especially the pianists who played in the Piazza and the jazz quintet which played some evenings in the Wheelhouse Bar.  I caught one comedian in the Explorers Lounge and walked out after 10 minutes.  Interestingly, I walked by during his later show and the place was crowded and people were howling at the stale material which prompted me to leave.  I also caught an interesting show that is done before the ship leaves in San Juan, called the Juan Carlos review.  Juan Carlos is  a wonderful Spanish guitarist who demonstrated the different styles of guitar music in Latin America.  Most enjoyalbe was the style which imitates a harp.  Juan Carlos also feature 3 young lady dancers who come out in Charo-esque costumes and shake their stuff.  One of the three is quite developed and I wondered how her back must feel after a performance.LOL  Lastly, the calypso band on the ship was really good.  I prefer my pools to be quiet but once in a while I like to listen to music and sit by a table and have a beverage. As a platinum member I was entitled to $75. worth of internet usage which comes to 150 minutes.  I didn't find the internet to be as painfully slow as I 've heard it can be at sea and the 150 minutes was more than enough for my use.  I was really impressed with this although $75. good for anything onboard the ship, say laundry, would have been even better.I used the spa pool, jacuzzi and the steam room in the men's locker room in the spa.  This area is childfree so it tends to be one of my favorite hangouts.  Although I did not book any appointments the ladies at the reception desk at the spa were always friendly and cheerful.  Another nice touch, unrelated to the spa, was when I requested my toilet to be fixed I received a follow-up phone message from passenger services to see if it had been taken care of.  It's touches like this that are why I find Princess to be a superior cruise lines.  I have sailed on other lines where the customer service end is very poor and the staff will even make you aware of this.I didn't book any shore excursions.  I just used the transfer service from the airport in San Juan to the ship.  I found this to work better than a taxi as they take your luggage from you before you board the mini-bus to the cruiseship terminal and you don't have to deal with the obnoxious baggage handlers there.  I saw many people struggling with the bags as you had to drag them to a check-in area and then walk in a different direction to get into the line to enter the terminal building.Embarkation was pretty painless since I had priorty embarkation.  I only had to wait in line to enter the terminal.  Once inside it was all pretty quick.  Disembarkation, however is a pretty uncomfortable affair.  Everyone must be out of their staterooms by 8:00am.  The Wheelhouse Bar was designated for Platinum and Elite members to wait until their disembarkation group was called.  There was not enough room to seat everyone and it was not a pleasant experience, especially since dismbarkation ran behind schedule.  However, once called, it was easy going, getting off the ship, collecting my luggage, going through customs and immigrations and getting a taxi home. All in all this was a wonderful cruise.  It could have been a little better but there was nothing about this cruise that would turn me away from Princess.  Of the many mass-marketed cruise lines, I still find that they have the edge over the others.

Cabin Review

Cabin II

Extra large cabin, plenty of storage space, terrific shower pressure, lots of noise from service elevators and housekeeping carts.
