Viking's 2 night longer cruise along the Rhine from Amsterdam to Basel is the way to go. The crew of the Lofn was the best. Cruise director Rene was entertaining and informative, Anna Maria at the front desk ever helpful, concierge Svetlana excellent...
Port selection was excellent. The extra time in Amsterdam allowed us to visit the Van Gogh & Rijksmuseum in addition to Viking's included canal and walking tours. Especially enjoyed the tours of Kinderdijkt windmills, Marksburg Castle and best of all the picturesque medieval village of Colmar. Cruised the gorgeous Rhine river castle district all afternoon with hilarious and informative commentary by cruise director Rene. Heidelberg Castle, Cologne and Strasbourg were entertaining. Only our optional Alsatian winery tour was below par and the ending tour through commercial/industrial Basel was nothing special. When docked in Breisach with an afternoon open I took the river cruise opportunity to leave the boat and hike the city to the top of the hill and back to the docks. Enjoyable, as was an impromptu concierge guided afternoon walk off the ship through the attractive riverside town of Speyer. An unexpected pleasure.
Meals were excellent with German Night buffet with entertainment tops. Love it when local cuisine is featured. We always had a light (heh!) buffet lunch on the sunny Aquavit terrace but in a shady spot as a change of pace from the fine restaurant.
Close to the desk. Easy access when you forget things.
Nice walk through the park and town.
